Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Rosa Roberts
The founding first lady of the United States, Martha Washington, is the feature of this four "First Ladies" Pebble Plus bilingual series. The other first ladies in this series include: Eleanor Roosevelt, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Michelle Obama. In this simplistic but informative bilingual text, young readers will get a great overview of the life and accomplishments of Martha Washington. Some of the interesting facts presented for bilingual readers are her previous marriage, her kindness, affluent upbringing, and also being called Lady Washington by the people of the nation. The Spanish translations are suitable and simplistic for either language learner. Accompanying the bilingual text are paintings and illustrations to coincide with the information. In addition, a timeline of events is found throughout the biographical pages. This book includes a table of contents, glossary, Internet sites, and an index. This book makes a suitable addition to a library collection or bilingual classroom library. Reviewer: Rosa Roberts

Meet the Author

Sally Lee is the author of numerous nonfiction books for readers from kindergarten through high school. Her interest in children’s literature began at the University of Missouri where she received her degree in education. Her years of teaching gave her desire to help children learn.
When she left the classroom to raise her own son and daughter, writing nonfiction became a way to continue educating children. Her favorite part of writing nonfiction is doing research. It reminds her of a treasure hunt, especially when it uncovers off-beat facts that nobody else knows. It also satisfies her own curiosity about the world. Sally and her husband live in Dallas, Texas, with their children and grandchildren nearby.

Gail Saunders-Smith is an assistant education professor at Youngstown State University in Ohio. She is also an independent staff developer, writer, and editor. She presents nationally at conferences on literacy development and instruction and has written numerous articles, children's non-fiction books, and professional resources.

Gail holds a B.S. and M.A. in Early Childhood Education from Kent State University and a M.S. in Administration and Supervision from Youngstown State University. She completed post-graduate work at The Ohio State University and earned a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from The University of Akron.

Gail is a former classroom teacher, Reading Recovery Teacher Leader, and Reading/Language Arts K-12 Supervisor and Coordinator of State and Federal Programs for the Summit County ESC.
