Children's Literature - Elizabeth D. Schafer
Combativeness dominates in this "The Olympic Sports" series title which emphasizes fighting contests have existed since ancient Olympiads and were incorporated into modern Olympics when they began in 1896. Sections examine Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling; boxing; and two martial arts: judo and taekwondo. Epee, saber, and foil represent three types of fencing discussed. This book explains rules for various events and how judges score athletes, warning readers about dangers due to the weaponry and physical demands involved in these sports. Facts and trivia present historical information for these sports and tell when women were permitted in some combat events. The text identifies significant athletes such as Hungarian fencer Aladar Gerevich. Illustrations of specialized clothing and equipment identify components and their purposes, noting measurements and objects' weights in captions. A drawing displays several grades of martial arts belts according to color. Another graphic lists competitors' weights for boxing categories. Photographs, both modern and archival, show athletes in action. Medalists at the 2004 Athens Olympics are listed for each event. Glossaries define terminology. "Super Stats" and "Animal Olympians" sidebars supplement the text. Because this book was published before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, results from those games are not provided to update statistics. A LernerSports edition by this author published in 2000 included some images and text found in this book. Reviewer: Elizabeth D. Schafer
