All Music Guide - Bryan Buss
Not just the Madonna wannabe she is often remembered as, Martika had songwriting skills and enough savvy to choose some of the best hooks of the '80s for her debut album. You'll find yourself singing these songs months after you've heard them. And that's a good thing. Her voice is thin and a bit limited, but she surrounds herself with producers who understand how to put a sheen on a great pop gem. The catchiest song is also the dumbest; "If You're Tarzan, I'm Jane," about a girl willing to adapt to anything her man wants her to be, is somewhat sexist, but it's such fun it's hard to not sing along. The big hit single, "Toy Soldiers," works with its childlike vocals and ...

The big hit single, "Toy Soldiers," works with its childlike vocals and lyrics, creating a haunting, effective dichotomy with its subject of drug addiction. Martika even has the chutzpah to cover a Carole King song -- "I Feel the Earth Move" -- and actually does it justice. Producer Michael Jay -- writer or co-writer of "Toy Soldiers," "If You're Tarzan, I'm Jane," "More Than You Know," "Cross My Heart," "You Got Me Into This," "It's Not What You're Doing," and "See If I Care" -- shows he has the ear of an amazing pop artist à la Bernie Taupin. The melodies and productions make this album a major success, but if pop isn't your thing, you might not care that these are hooks many superstars would kill for.

    pop music with Rock atitude!

This is a great tape. she has a REALLY good voice. if you heard it you would be thinking ''wow''. you just have to get this album and hear it. I like all the songs on the album. It has really cool 80's sounds. when i hear this album, i think ''why isnt eighties music popular anymore?'' its the whole decade thing I guess. She has such a good voice, I am going to try and improve my singing so I sing like her. She kinda has the type of voice like cyndi lauper, cute and strong. so if you like cyndi lauper, you might like her. except cyndi has way better lyrics. On this album the lyrics aren't to cheesy. otherwise i wouldnt be listening to it. But this album is really cool for being a pop album. Its fun!

    Always enjoyable to listen to

I have owned this album for years and I never tire of it. All the songs are catchy and fun to listen to. Most albums become stale or dull by the fourth or fifth song, but this one is awesome from start to finish. I highly recommend it. Don't be disuaded by her 'cookie cutter' pop look.

The first half of the album is pretty solid.

"If You're Tarzan, I'm Jane" is a decent first track with a slightly adult love theme. +

"Cross My Heart" is wonderful cover (originally done by Eighth Wonder), her first single is good introduction of Martika, a dance-pop singer. She sounds most excited in her voice and music. +

"More Than You Know"(#18 U.S.) is her second single , but with a slight departure from her debut single with a "friendly club vibe." +

"Toy Soliders"(#1 U.S), her third single is the lone ballad on the album and it is the best song on the album. A song about drug addiction is growth in mature and a departure from her dance-pop elements. +

"You Got Me Into This" a "good girl meets bad boy" song, but lacks the spark and shine from 4 earlier mention songs. -

The second half of the album is mixed.

"I Feel The Earth Move"(#25 U.S),(Carole King cover) her fourth and final single in the U.S. The song is considerable decent and showcases her vocal range from low to high back and forth. +

"Water" is another departure for her with incorporating latin percussion and partially singing in Spanish. +

"It's Not What You're Doing" is interesting with the male interest who's known for his love but lacks the ambition to give his love to her. The song's music isn't as appealing with lacking being memorable. -

"See If I Care" is a song to let the male interest trust her that she does care for him. The song is the weakest on the album, but still somewhat enjoyable. +/-

"Alibis" is a song that introduces the saxophone as Martika's spoken words of disgust with her male interest. The song is decent, but still surprised the song includes the saxophone. +/-

After the finishing listening to the album, Martika gives a decent impression of herself as a dance-pop singer. However, she is pigeonholed as a Madonna-ish type, but tries to showcase her indivduality.

    + = Recommend +/- = Mixed - = Not Recommend Rating = 7/10 (Grade = C)
