    Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
It is hard to believe than more than 40 years have passed since Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. His story as told by David Colbert is riveting and easily read in one sitting. His approach is to tell the story of Reverend King and the Civil Rights Movement by selecting 10 pivotal days. Those who are already familiar with Reverend King or what was happening in the 1950s and '60s will not be surprised at the choices, but they may learn a bit more about the background within the Civil Rights movement—the frictions, personalities, politics and Reverend King's unwavering commitment to nonviolence. He was far from a perfect man, but he was a man who took his role as a leader and his commitment to his beliefs to his death and that along with so much else is to be admired. His speeches are a continual inspiration and in a real testament to his oratory and the impact of the Civil Rights movement, he heard his words echoed by President Lyndon Johnson in one of the most powerful speeches by an American president on the subject of Civil Rights and the Voting Rights Act in particular. How proud Reverend King would be to have witnessed the election of 2008, when a man who had a white mother and a black father was elected the 44th president of the United States. Yes, indeed, this country has come a long way in a really short time. Part of the "10 Days" series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
