Martin Luther King, Jr.: Civil Rights Leader

Overview

As one of the most important and inspirational leaders of America's civil rights movement, Martin Luther King, Jr. became the catalyst for change in a nation marked by segregation and discrimination. Unlike the civil rights activists who argued for a violent response to segregation and prejudice, King believed that peaceful resistance could bring about great change. He dreamed of an America where all people could enjoy the same rights and opportunities and then worked tirelessly to make his dream a reality. ...

    DR. martin Luther King

    Martin Luther King JR.

    By: Robert Jakoubek

The book I have chosen is a biography on the late Dr. Martin Luther King JR. I chose this book because Dr. King (I believe) is a very very important person in the Afro- American history. The main focus in the novel is to bring out all the important timelines in Dr. King's lifetime, key roles in society that he played, and family and friends that he had.

The revolution of Dr. King was the struggle of black Americans for equality and civil rights. For 12 years Dr. King confronted the humiliating system of segregation that had kept black Americans as second class citizens. Meanwhile, he and his friends had faced a lot of white-abuse. They had been beaten, arrested, sent to jail and spat on. Their homes and churches were burned, their families were threatened, and their friends were murdered. Yet they kept on going. Fighting for freedom. Freedom that whites had freedom the earned, freedom they deserved. They marched, they staged boycotts, and they broke unjust laws. King organized and led marches for blacks' right to vote, desegregation, labor rights and other basic civil rights. Most of these rights were successfully enacted into the law of the United States with the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the 1965 Voting Rights Acts.
King and the SCLC applied the principles of nonviolent protest with great success by strategically choosing the method of protest and the places in which protests were carried out. There were often dramatic stand-offs with segregationist authorities. Sometimes these confrontations turned violent.
In the other hand they awakened the nation and the whole world to the shame of American racial persecution. In 1957, King, Ralph Abernathy, and other civil rights activists founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). The group was created to harness the moral authority and organizing power of black churches to conduct non-violent protests in the service of civil rights reform. King led the SCLC until his death.

Nevertheless Dr. Martin Luther King (I believe) is a very very important person in the Afro-American history. Dr. King sacrificed a lot. He marched, he preached, he spoke. He was an influencer. He did what he felt was right for himself, family and friends, but more of all; his people. It is not inaccurate to believe Dr. King was a great person. He died April 4, 1968. He was shot in a hotel in Memphis Tennessee. His legacy still lives today and he will never be forgotten.

    I really like this book.

My favorite character is Martin because he helped a lot of people by boy- cotting the bus . I liked the time my character gave his speech (I have a Dream). He was shot in front of his hotel room.
