Purpose: An understanding of physical chemical principles is essential for developing a robust pharmaceutical product. This book presents topics of interest to pharmaceutical scientists and, as such, it has been well accepted by this community and by pharmacy educators.
Audience: The book was originally written for pharmacy students, teachers, and practitioners, but, because of the change in the nature of pharmacy practice, the book has evolved over time and this edition is intended for both pharmacy students and teachers and pharmaceutical scientists. Anyone interested in understanding the fundamental physical chemical principles would find this an excellent resource. The editor is well known as an educator, mentor, and researcher in academia and the pharmaceutical industry. The contributors are known for their extensive publications.
Features: This sixth edition adds a chapter and maintains its superior quality both in content and in presentation. It is a comprehensive resource that provides adequate discussions of states of matter, thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, ionic equilibria, solutions, dispersions, and other relevant topics. Separate chapters on pharmaceutical polymers and solid oral dosage forms should be useful to pharmaceutical scientists. An expertly written chapter on drug delivery and targeting is especially informative. Moreover, the new chapter on pharmaceutical biotechnology should serve as a handy reference. The learning objectives in each chapter explain what the chapter will cover, and the "Key Concept" boxes help readers remember or review critical issues. The online resources for students include plenty of practice problems, and the instructor resources include a separate set of practice problems with answers. These online features help reduce the bulkiness of the book. The graphics and color on the chapter headings are a bit too much. This is already a well accepted book; there is no need to try to make it more visually attractive. Readers will use the book for its contents, not its colorful getup. Subheadings of each chapter with page numbers could have been listed in the contents. A short chapter on radiopharmaceuticals would fit well with the title and objectives of this book.
Assessment: This has been recognized as a world-class textbook by pharmacy educators and students and pharmaceutical scientists. It is an expertly written, comprehensive resource on the physicochemical principles and their applications in the pharmaceutical sciences. I have used this textbook as a student, and now I require my students to use it. I have found it to be an invaluable resource and am aware of numerous other scientists who use it as well. This is a must-have reference for anyone interested in understanding the applications of physicochemical principles in the pharmaceutical sciences. The sixth edition features thoroughly revised chapters with current concepts in relevant topics. The online resources will greatly benefit students.
