Marty Casey saddled his band with a name that unfortunately conjures memories of Spinal Tap -- Lovehammers is not a far cry from Nigel Tufnel's "Lick My Love Pump" -- which could very well be part of the reason why he and Lovehammers were stuck eking out a living in Chicago for years. Only when Casey joined the cast of the first season of CBS's Rock Star, a reality show where the winner joined INXS as their lead vocalist, did the Lovehammers capture some national attention, particularly since Casey turned into a fan favorite, winding up as the second-place finisher on the show. That led Casey and the Lovehammers to a major-label contract with Epic, which ...

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
That led Casey and the Lovehammers to a major-label contract with Epic, which released an eponymous album in the first weeks of 2006. This is not their first album -- in 2004, they released Murder on My Mind, a self-released debut. Marty Casey & Lovehammers is on a much larger scale, of course, and appropriately, it's been given a production that's big, glossy, and shiny, something that's ready for radio. Lovehammers weren't always this slick -- Murder on My Mind was a hard, heavy neo-grunge album, and prior to Rock Star, the band did a few sessions with the notoriously independent record producer/engineer Steve Albini, one of which "Straight as an Arrow" carried over to this album. But that's the exception to the rule here: apart from that brief blow tucked away at the end of the album, this is polished, hooky neo-grunge the likes of which hasn't been heard on mainstream radio since about 1996 or 1997. This isn't a revival so much as it is a re-creation, and it's a successful one that would sound comfortable played next to Bush, Stone Temple Pilots, Sponge, Better Than Ezra, the Verve Pipe, or Seven Mary Three, and lacking the grim monotony and meatheaded misogyny that plagues Nickelback and Puddle of Mudd. That's because the Lovehammers really are a straight-ahead rock band that came of age during the great alt-rock boom of the '90s and never caught a break while the music was a success. Now that they have that break, they've made a record that sounds like it's about ten years old, but in a pleasant way, since it has glistening hooks and some strong riffs, and Casey is an ingratiating frontman, never sounding quite muscular enough for the music but somehow more appealing because of it. If Marty Casey & Lovehammers was released during the peak of alt-rock in 1996, it may have faded into the background, leaving behind only a single that got some rotation on 120 Minutes, but in 2006, there aren't many mainstream bands doing this kind of music, so it winds up sounding a little fresh, even if it doesn't exactly sound new or distinctive. Nevertheless, it's a good modern rock record, and even if it took a reality show to get Marty Casey & Lovehammers to a national stage, this proves that they're ready to seize the opportunity now that it's finally landed in their laps.

What you don't know can hurt you.

You may know Marty Casey from Rockstar INXS, but now you should be introduced to the Lovehammers. After experiencing several live shows, I can understand why these four guys have such an intensely loyal following, which I am happily a part of. This album showcases a wide variety of their sounds: from the high energy ass-kicking of Straight as an Arrow, to the beautiful and melancholy lullaby of Clouds. Marty Casey’s voice demands attention with a strong voice that is so perfectly rough and smooth in all the right places. I think that if you’re like most people who are exhausted with today’s so-called “rock” bands, a dose of Lovehammers will be refreshing for you. I definitely suggest getting Murder on my Mind and L’Strange, two of their older albums, along with MCLH. (Momm is a bit more raw, and L’Strange is amazingly lyric-driven) And most importantly, if you appreciate having your mind completely blown, check out these guys LIVE. Lovehammers connect with the audience in a way that I’ve never experienced, and pump out the most contagious energy, that turns even the shyest of the wallflowers into dancing queens. Their website is definitely worth checking out, too. www.lovehammers.com

    Excellent Album!

Thanks to Rockstar INXS I got to see Marty Casey. I was glad he came in 2nd so he and his own band could continue and thrive with the newfound publicity. Excellent music, musicians, and of course, lead singer. I'm wishing them the greatest success!!

EVERY SONG HAS "HIT" WRITTEN ALL OVER IT!

This CD totally Rocks! It is full of straight-up, raw Rock tunes and touching ballads. Marty Casey's vocals are clear and strong and the band is chock-full of amazingly talented musicians. Wailing guitars and rhythmic pounding drums will capture you, move you to another level and keep you captivated.

Worth Every Penny! SOOO many great songs!!!

This CD, Marty Casey & Lovehammers is filled with great music! From "Casualty" which is an uplifting rock tune, to "Trees"-the best recording of it ever, both myself and my teenagers rock to these songs. I usually buy a CD and end up only listening to 2 or 3 songs on it. But WE LISTEN TO EVERY SINGLE SONG ON THIS CD. Yes, it IS that good! We have seen Marty Casey & Lovehammers in concert and WHAT A SHOW!!! The energy is amazing! They sound so good live. We will see them every chance we get.

    A good album

For RockStar fans, you’ll find that this album showcases Marty’s voice better than his ‘Murder on my Mind’ album. However there is still a good bit of yelling rather than singing and one wonders if the lessons learned from INXS band members and Dave Navarro have been forgotten. Four of the songs are repeats (The Tunnel, Eyes Can’t See, Call of Distress, Clouds) but they are good tunes worth hearing again. The raw, heart-felt sound of ‘Trees’ that fans heard performed both as acoustic and electric on RockStar seems to have been over-processed in the studio. EPIC’s professional recording quality is obvious, providing a LoveHammers album that sounds good at pumped up volumes - the best way to listen to this one.

    High Energy Rock - Incredible

The Lovehammers put together a compilation of incredible songs. This CD rocks - it's got something for everyone, yet still has a edgy rock sound throughout the entire CD. If you like this CD, you'll be thrilled to see these guys in concert. They put together a show that has pure energy and will have you out of your seats for the entire evening, even if you've never heard them before. A rare find!

    Prepare Yourself To Be Hammered!

Marty Casey and the Lovehammers have finally come of age, and just in time to rock our world with music and lyrics that will get into your head and get you moving again. Every song has merit from the new song Casualty, to the song showcased on Rock Star, Trees. The tight knit band hailing from Chicago meld old style and new, creating a richness to their music that begs for more. Listen but be warned, head banging may occur spontaneously!

    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Marty Casey, runner-up of the Rockstar INXS tv show competition, may not have won the contest to be the new lead singer of INXS but all I can say is thank heavens he didn't! I've heard the new INXS CD and was not impressed at all. Congratulations to Marty and Lovehammers for signing with Epic and producing such an incredible CD. The entire CD is excellent and makes you constantly want to turn the volume up. The music is infectious and quite simply rocks! I heard Marty perform his original song 'Trees' during the competition and absolutely loved it so I am very happy to see it on this CD. I highly recommend this album!
