This lavish, hefty, and attractive oversized hardcover (with slipcase) reproduces hundreds of Marvel's cover designs, beginning with pulp artist Frank R. Paul's striking 1939 man-of-fire illustration for Marvel Comics No. 1. Contents are heavily weighted toward more recent material, with the Golden Age (1939–56) covered in only 12 pages, and half of the book devoted fully to the most recent 25 years. Characters well known from movies are heavily featured (Spider-Man, Iron Man, the X-Men). Big-name artists such as Jack Kirby and Frank Miller are prominent but also included are Marvel stalwarts such as John Buscema and much fine contemporary work by Alan Davis, John Cassaday, and others, including several of David Aja's bold Hawkeye designs. Nonsuperhero comics are given short shrift, and licensed series such as Star Wars are omitted. Some covers are presented larger than original size, though most are smaller; each one has a paragraph of explanatory text. The covers are generally both representative and well chosen, with room for some quirky selections, among them a George Perez shot of the Avengers's butler Jarvis posing with his vacuum cleaner. VERDICT A pleasing showcase for some iconic work.—S.R.
