Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Fans of the famous umbrella-toting nanny will welcome the return of Mary Poppins from A to Z by P.L. Travers, illus. by Mary Shepard, first published in 1962. From "A is for Annabel... out for an Airing, on Mary Poppins' Arm," to "Z is for Zodiac" on a brightly lit New Year's Eve night ("All the neighbors are full of song and Zest"), the book brims with humor and charming scenes of the Banks children at play. Children's Literature
Mary Poppins is the original English nanny. Generations of children have long been enchanted by her charming and sometimes unusual methods. Mary Poppins was first introduced in 1934, but this alphabet book, which was originally published in 1962, has just recently become readily available. It features a full-page vignette for each letter of the alphabet. Each vignette teaches the reader about the five Banks children that are in Mary's care. They also discover other unique characters, such as Admiral Boom, who lives in a house that is built like a boat, and Robertson Ay, who enjoys a good rest at any time. The vignettes contain many words that begin with the applicable alphabet letter. The result is a style of writing that has the words effortlessly flowing, almost creating a form of prose. The recently hand-tinted illustrations were first created by Mary Poppin's original illustrator, Mary Shepard. The result is a book that will be appreciated by young and old alike. 2006 (orig. 1962), Harcourt, Ages 8 to 12.
