About the Author

Ann Heinrichs grew up in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She began playing the piano at age three and thought she would grow up to be a pianist. Instead, she became a writer. She is the author of more than 200 books for children and young adults on Asian, African, and U.S. history and cultures, as well as grammar and natural history subjects. Ann has also written numerous newspaper, magazine, and encyclopedia articles. Ann has traveled to the Middle East, Asia, and Europe, and now lives in Chicago, IL.

This book in the series "This Land Is Your Land" aligns with elementary social studies curriculum. Maryland's history, varied topography, industries and businesses, and well-known landmarks are covered in 48 pages. Fewer multi-syllable words and more sentence variety would have avoided choppy sentences. Even so, the content is interesting. Maryland is geographically described as looking like a dinosaur's open mouth, with teeth formed by the Chesapeake Bay's peninsulas, an excellent analogy for young readers. "Welcome to Maryland" and the chapter, "A Trip through Time," cover similar material and may confuse students. Teacher development of a brief study guide is recommended for clarification. Illustrations, mostly photographs, range from noteworthy to whimsical. Extensive backmatter increases the book's scope, with ten sections about state symbols, resources, famous people (most of whom are not mentioned in the text)—even a recipe for crab cakes. As a Marylander, I fault some content. Even state Web pages admit to 89 degrees, not 75 degrees, as average July temperature. Maps, touted by the publisher as "original," are clever but provide skewed information. For example, Emmitsburg, population 2,290, is on all three maps but Frederick, the second largest incorporated city, with an illustrious history, is on none and not mentioned in the text, although a photo of city hall is included. Vetting by several state residents would have corroborated content.
