Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
Maryland was originally established as a Crown Colony where religious choice would be allowed. Over the years antagonism between English Catholics and Protestants upset that balance of toleration but ultimately was set aside in the name of the greater good. Maryland also was a vital commercial and agricultural holding that the British strove to retain control of. Eventually, as the tide of independence spawned by the American Revolution swept the British out of the Thirteen Colonies, Maryland joined the newly formed United States and assumed its role as one of the original states. The story of the Maryland Colony is one marked by exploration, warfare, and a pioneering spirit. It is this tale that writer Kevin Cunningham tells in this concise illustrated history. Written in a highly readable way, The Maryland Colony offers readers a fine introduction to the fascinating subject of Colonial history and, more specifically, how Maryland developed as first a Royal Colony and then a state in a fledgling republic.
