Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Zaniness and humor abound in this tale of the fifth grade underdogs from Northwest Southeast Central School who are soundly beaten by Northwest West Academy every year at the annual track meet. The plot centers on how Mr. Grunt, an overbearing coach, tries to get Northwest Southeast Central School's students in shape to win. Mr. Brainfright, their classroom teacher, steps in and concludes that self confidence and enthusiasm are the keys to winning. Thus, he dons a banana suit he found and becomes the spirited mascot the school needs, but much to the chagrin of the students, he takes on the persona of a real banana! The plot moves swiftly and alludes to the fact that the student narrator, Henry McThrottle, was once involved in a criminal incident with the banana suit. The story peaks with the actual track meet, filled with nasty doings from Northwest West and superb winnings by Northwest Southeast Central School students. NSC students must creatively solve several problems to come out on top, and Henry is cleared of any previous wrongdoing. Characters sport interesting names like Mr. Brainfright, the teacher, Mr. Constrictor, the opposition's coach, and Grant Gadget, whose dad makes ridiculous inventions. In addition, their characteristics fit their names. Mid-grade readers will enjoy the silliness of plot and characters. This well-written book accomplishes the task of pulling readers into the action.
