I'm a huge fan of Janelle Stalder's books -- HUGE, HUGE, HUUUUGE fan girl here.  Her gift for story-telling and the complexity of characters she creates is unmatched in today's market.  In MASKED we pick up where the very incredible SWITCH left off (check out my SIX star review on my blog, Known to Read) and as a bonus we get to some of the events from SWITCH unfolding from Bridgette's point of view.  I really liked seeing things through Bridgette's eyes.  She's such a contrast from her sister and is so brave despite her vulnerability and inexperience.  And then there's Roman ... happy sigh.  He's a great character and a perfect hero for Bridgette.  He's in a situation where he'd be viewed as the bad guy by so many, but truly has a good heart.  One of the great thing about Stalder's writing is that her characters always have such depth and none are purely good nor evil.  This is especially true of Ludwig.  He's loathsome in so many ways, but we see a side to him in MASKED that makes you care for the guy and feel pretty sad for him as events unfold.  Stalder's books always leave me feeling so conflicted, but in a good way.   Another amazing thing about Stalder's books is that she always has so much going on with a full cast of characters to love, hate or be unsure about.  Despite the complexity of her stories, the reader never gets lost or confused.  MASKED is another fabulous buffet of layered story lines with engaging characters of whom a reader just cannot get enough.  I'm dying to see what happens next and how this all plays out.  I can never figure out how Stalder will resolve her plot conflicts and am looking forward to more surprises, plot twist and tasty romance!  Yay!!!  I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.  See my other reviews on my blogspot blog, Known to Read.

So, we jump right in where we left off. Charlotte/Dina/X sister’s Bridgette has gone to the inside of the center of the new world war compound, impersonating her, because she wants to save Charlotte. She has no idea what she’s going up against. This characters are all back for some more awesome, and we even get to meet so excellent new characters, and I can’t wait to see what’s to come now that we’ve had the little surprise plot twist with Bridgette. :) Nope, won’t be spilling that little secret. LOL  So, we not only get to see inside Bridgette’s head, who’s not really that much like Charlotte. But I wouldn’t have expected that, with Charlotte watching her mother’s murder, and living in the compound for so long. Bridgette is a little more carefree. And yet, she is so surprised but Roman and Ludwig’s care and concern for Charlotte. I think Bridgette maybe thought Charlotte was living a miserable prisoned life. She got some surprises. She also has the major hots for Roman, and he for her. But then it gets complicated because they are on opposite sides. And she’s supposed to be her sister, so does Roman have the hots for her or for Charlotte? ooooooh, a little drama is always fun :) Plus, it’s pretty cool to see things from Bridgette who’s funny and more spunky than Charlotte.  Roman is awesome! I loved him, even if I thought his well intentioned actions were a little off. He’s hard, but you finally get to learn a whole lot about him. He’s one of my favorite characters. He may be strong, and sometimes cruel, but you also see that he has remorse, and feelings, and he wants to do the right thing, but sometimes you are taught something, and things can change. Roman and Bridgette’s relationship is a really really cute one. I am all for them!  And though we are still mostly about Bridgette and Roman, we are definitely still all about Charlotte and Pete. And Pete’s brothers, and the new characters, and the rest of the resistance. And lets talk bad guys. You know, you will get to see a new side of Ludwig in this one, and I am whole heartedly saying that he’s only kind of a bad guy, the new bad guy that seriously needs to die is Charlotte and Bridgette’s dad. And I know this will sound mean, but Roman gave her mother a mercy killing because with the way these two have treated there kids, it’s just horrible!!! I am all in for this one. I just love this series! I love the writing, I love the writing style, and I would love to know how Ms J’s brain comes up with these awesome ideas! I love it! Gimme Gimme Gimme more! Always! :) And warning, there’s always a cliff hanger LOL well played Ms J! 5 MAGNIFICENT NEW WORLD RESISTANCE PAWS!!!

A Perfect Follow Up To An Impressive New Series! Full Of Action, Amazing Characters and Nail-Biting Suspense! 4.5 Sensational, New World Stars! The Review: As most of my friends know, I'm a huge Janelle Stalder fan. I love her books. She writes such interesting, thrilling, explosive and fantastical stories filled with the absolute best characters. So when given the opportunity to read and review any of her work, I jump right on it. Masked will rank right up there with my all time favorites by her. I loved this read! Story/Character... This is book two in the New World series. In book one, Switch, we left off with Bridgette, Charlotte’s sister, heading off into enemy territory, pretending to be her sister, also known as Weapon X, where she was told to infiltrate the New Word Order headquarters at her father's command. After having beat his youngest daughter, Charlotte within an inch of her life, The General, their father, saw an opportunity to hold Charlotte as leverage and use Bridgette as a tool to spy on his enemy, set to do damage and harm when the opportunity revealed itself. Bridgette’s life could be in real danger if she’s ever discovered and trying to fool the camp into believing she is her sister might be much harder than she anticipated, even hiding behind the dark mask her sister was made to wear. Add to her anxiety, is the very formidable and handsome Roman, who I have been dying to learn more about since book one. He seems to attract Bridgette in ways she never thought possible and her situation is tenuous at best. In the rogue camp, unknown to Bridgette, Charlotte has been rescued from her father's clutches by Pete and his band of rebels. Together, they formulate a plan to save Bridgette but needing help, they seek out another band of rebels in another district. Even with the extra manpower, things never seem to go according to plan, especially when they have the General out there with delusions of grandeur. But there are a lot of secrets and revelations and everyone has an agenda. Add to that, budding romances all over the place and you have one heck of a read! To top it all off, we see a much different side to Ludwig, the “enemy”, who seems to have earned a reprieve in my eyes. I came to love his character. Thoughts... This book is filled to the brim with wonderful scenes between all the characters we grew to love in book one, Switch, and also introduced an array of new characters who were a thrill to get to know. I absolutely loved the introduction of another rogue group called the Archers. This group was wild, uninhibited and full of energy. There were love matches going on all over the place and a ton of twist and turns I truly wasn’t expecting. We see a lot of the sexy Roman and his romance with Bridgette forms into a riveting, angst filled journey as these two embark on the forbidden. Pete and Charlotte are still my favorite so far but there’s a lot of wonderful pairings to choose from in this book. And best of all, we finally get to know WHY Charlotte is special, along with some other exciting revelations that I won't mention because it would spoil if for you. Yes, I know, I'm a tease. But all the questions I had from book one, are answered in this one with new questions and adventures raised that are a fantastic lead in to the next book in the series, Tested, which I cannot wait for! The Wrap Up: This book is a perfect addition to a series I'm already in love with. The characters, the storylines, the plot.. all of it make for a fantastic read and I can’t suggest it enough. And with a cliffy that will shock you and have you wide eyed, book three can’t come fast enough! Note: *Written for Craves the Angst Book Reviews* - I received this eARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Masked, the second in the New World series, follows our beloved characters once again, putting a little more focus on Roman and Bridgette this go around. But don’t let that put you off, you’ll enjoy the tension that mounts between these two as Bridgette is pretending to be Weapon X in the compound of her father’s enemy. But, will Bridgette have the guts to pull the trigger when the time comes? Charlotte and Pete and the other “rebels” are fighting to get Bridgette out of that compound. But at what cost? Things fall apart, secrets are revealed, and people fall in love. What more could you ask for in a novel? I adored every single second of this novel, and I CANNOT wait until the next book!

I've been looking forward to this book ever since finishing Switch, especially with that cliffhanger of an ending! We were introduced to Bridgette in the first book but were not really given the opportunity to get to know her. She is much softer than her sister, Charlotte, but don't mistake that softness for weakness. She is full of life and love and is determined to live each day to its fullness but is also willing to do what she has to in order to survive. She is a fighter. Roman I was super excited to find out more about. In the first book I was never sure what to think of him. He was such an interesting character, however, that I just could not get him out of my head. And now…he's everything I was hoping he would be and more. Don't get me wrong. He's definitely not one of the good guys, but he is soooooo good! He did what he had to in order to survive, but that doesn't really negate his past acts. So where does this leave us? Definitely confused. One thing I really liked about his character was that he never made excuses for who he was or what he did. The only thing he has now is to try to be better, whatever the cost to himself. I loved each and every character in this story, and I love how the author is able to take a story where there should be a very clear right/wrong and blur those edges. Her characters make decisions based on their feelings and the situations they are involved in rather than the consequences that might come later. There was a lot going on in the story in terms of plot as well. The fight for survival is ongoing but with new revelations around every corner. Overall I loved this book and I love this series. There was a very nice setup for the next book with the oh so mysteriously intriguing Tyler, and I can't wait! Thank you to Janelle Stalder for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
