About Test Selection 
The MTEL tests are conducted during morning and afternoon test sessions. Test sessions
are four hours in length. However, the General Curriculum test is only given in the
afternoon session. The afternoon session has a reporting time of 1:00 p.m. and ends at
approximately 5:45 p.m. You may take both subtests or just one single subtest of the General
Curriculum during the four hour session. 

About the MTEL General Curriculum Test 
The purpose of the MTEL General Curriculum (03) Test is to assess the knowledge
and skills of prospective Massachusetts’ teachers. Prospective teachers are required to
take the MTEL General Curriculum Test. This test encompasses two subtests:

• The Multi-Subject subtest of language arts, history and social science, science and technology/engineering, and the integration of knowledge and understanding 

• The mathematics subtest 

 
How Is the MTEL General Curriculum Test Scored? 

Multiple-Choice Questions 
Scoring of the multiple-choice questions is based strictly on the number of test questions answered correctly. You do not lose any additional points for wrong answers. Each multiple-choice question counts the same toward the total score.

 
Open-Response Questions
Open-response questions are scored holistically by two or more qualified educators.
Scorers receive training in scoring procedures and are monitored for accuracy and consistency.
Scorers are typically teachers, administrators, arts and science faculty, teacher
education faculty, and other content specialists.

Scorers are trained to provide an overall judgment, not to indicate specific errors. A
score is assigned based on a scale of various levels of performance from weak to strong.
If a response is blank, unrelated to the assignment, illegible, or in a language other than
the target language, no points will be given for it.

 
When Will I Receive My Score Report, and What Will It Look Like?
Your scores will be mailed to you on the score date published at
www.mtel.nesinc.com/MA13_testdates.asp.

 
Unofficial test scores are posted on the Internet at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on the score
report dates listed on http://www.mtel.nesinc.com/MA13_testdates.asp. For each test date,
the unofficial scores are kept on the Internet for approximately two weeks. You may only
view these scores once during the posting period—for security reasons.

 
Can I Retake the Test?
If you wish to retake a test, you may do so at a subsequent test administration. Please consult the MTEL website at www.mtel.nesinc.com for information about test registration. The MTEL website also includes information regarding test retakes and score reports.

 
Who Administers the Test?
The MTEL is administered by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary
Education.

 
When and Where Is the Test Given? How Long Will It Take?
The MTEL is administered five times a year at eight locations across the state, as
detailed in the MTEL Registration Bulletin. Additionally, on two of the eight test days,
the MTEL is offered at seven out-of-state locations, provided that a minimum number of

The tests are scheduled to be completed within a maximum of four hours. Note that
the MTEL General Curriculum is available on all test dates but is given only during the
afternoon sessions.

 
How to Use This Book and TestWare®

When Should I Start Studying? 
It is never too early to start studying for the MTEL General Curriculum Test. The earlier
you begin, the more time you will have to sharpen your skills. Do not procrastinate!
Cramming is not an effective way to study because it does not allow you the time you
need to think about the content, review the content required in the objectives, and take the
practice tests.

What Should I Study First?
We strongly recommend that you begin your preparation with the TestWare® tests.

What Do the Review Sections Cover?
The targeted review in this book is designed to help you sharpen the skills you need to
approach the MTEL General Curriculum Test, as well as provide strategies for attacking

a separate chapter. The skills required for all areas are extensively discussed to optimize
your understanding of what the examination covers.

Your schooling has taught you most of the information you need to answer the questions
on the test. The education classes you took should have provided you with the know-how to
make important decisions about situations you will face as a teacher. The review sections
in this book are designed to help you fit the information you have acquired into the objectives
specified on the MTEL. Going over your class notes and textbooks together with the
reviews provided here will give you an excellent springboard for passing the examination.

Studying for the MTEL General Curriculum Test
Choose the time and place for studying that works best for you. Some people set aside
a certain number of hours every morning to study, while others prefer to study at night
before going to sleep. Other people study off and on during the day—for instance, while
waiting for a bus or during a lunch break. Only you can determine when and where your
study time will be most effective. Be consistent and use your time efficiently. Work out a
study routine and stick to it.

When you take the practice tests, simulate the conditions of the actual test as closely
as possible. Turn off your television and radio, and sit down at a table in a quiet room,
free from distraction. On completing a practice test, score it and thoroughly review the
explanations to the questions you answered incorrectly; however, do not review too much
at any one time. Concentrate on one problem area at a time by reviewing the question and
explanation, and by studying the review in this guide until you are confident that you have
mastered the material.

Keep track of your scores so you can gauge your progress and discover general weaknesses
in particular sections. Give extra attention to the reviews that cover your areas of
difficulty, so you can build your skills in those areas. Many have found the use of study or
note cards very helpful for this review.

How Can I Use My Study Time Efficiently?
Our study schedule allows for thorough preparation for the MTEL General
Curriculum Test. The course of study presented here is seven weeks, but you can condense or expand the timeline to suit your personal schedule. It is vital that you adhere to a
structured plan and set aside ample time each day to study. The more time you devote to
studying, the more prepared and confident you will be on the day of the test.

    Worked, but not the best.

    I used this book to study for the General Curriculum Multi-Subject subtest, and I passed on the first try- but BARELY. I knew that my weakest area was in science. I studied the science chapter extensively and I still scored the lowest on that section.
    The test is so general, though, that it's hard to prepare.
