Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Michael Joel Schrift, D.O., M.A.(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is a useful study supplement for the individual preparing to take the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology written section of board certification. Developed from Massachusetts General Hospital's review course and written by two psychiatric educators, this question book would be helpful in preparation for the boards in psychiatry, except that there are few case-based questions, which the USMLE, PRITE, and ABPN all have implemented.
Purpose: The purpose is to produce "the ultimate study tool for certification, re-certification, in-service exams..." I wouldn't go that far, but the question book could be useful.
Audience: The intended audience is obviously candidates for the examinations.
Features: The questions include various formats such as multiple choice, "except" questions, matching, extended matching, true-false, and, occasionally, case-based. Answers are provided with a brief annotation and references to these McGraw-Hill textbooks: Massachusetts General Hospital Guide to Primary Care Psychiatry, by Stern et al. and Manual of Neurologic Therapeutics, by Samuels.
Assessment: This question book is meant as an accompaniment to Stern's and Herman's Massachusetts General Hospital Psychiatry Update and Board Preparation, 2nd edition (McGraw-Hill, 2004). As a supplement, the question book is very useful.
