Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer:Steven T. Herron, MD(University of Arizona Health Sciences Center)
Description:This up-to-date book contains the most recent information available regarding the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of psychopathology in most of its forms.
Purpose:In an attempt to provide clinicians with a one-stop reference for their psychiatric queries, this book addresses such areas as the use of psychopharmacology and psychotherapy in combination with an improved understanding of neuropsychiatric aspects of disease.
Audience:While useful for anyone interested in learning more about psychiatric issues, this book is primarily focused on practicing clinicians and trainees, from psychiatrists to master's level social workers, medical students, and residents.
Features:From the paper used to print the pages, to the diagrams, tables, images, pictures, and drawings, to the appendixes, every effort has been made to provide high quality, readable, and relevant information. The references are current, and each chapter begins with a "Key Points" section to explain the salient data to follow.
Assessment:Though I have reviewed other books which were adequate for their purposes, I was almost always disappointed with their production quality, most notably in the reproduction of the neuroimaging. However, this book does not suffer from the same drawbacks. Though quite expensive, it is worth the price, as it is not only physically appealing in virtually every way, but also quite useful and relevant for practicing clinicians. While every attempt has been made to keep its chapters brief, they are nonetheless packed with vitalinformation. It is physically quite heavy (almost 10 pounds) — which makes it less useful to lug around as a reference — but the inclusion of an online version (the password for which is on the inside cover of the purchased book), renders this problem moot, unless one lacks access to the Internet at their workplace.
