Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Children's Literature
Another wonderful addition to the "Celebrate the States" series, this book captures the flavor and personality of Massachusetts. A handsomely bound hardcover, with richly colored photographs and artwork on every page, the reader is given information on the geography, history, artistic heritage, government and people in friendly text that moves easily between topics. Children will delight in all the interesting details. Did you know that the state is named for an Indian tribe, the Massachusetts, which means "city near the hill?" There is a plethora of facts laid out in the back of the book, as well as short biographies of important people, a historical timeline, and further references to follow. Any student looking for information on this New England State would do well to see this book! 2000, Marshall Cavendish Corporation/Benchmark Books, Ages 8 up, $35.64. Reviewer: Nancy Partridge
Children's Literature - Cynthia Levinson
Part of the series "Celebrate the States," this title provides information about the geography (including flora and fauna), history, people and cultures, government, economy, and landmarks in Massachusetts. Little known stories—such as a legend about a giant Indian who caught whales with his hands, and a tale about the origin of the name "Cape Cod"—add interest to material that is factual, detailed, and straight forward. Almost every page contains an illustration, chart, sidebar or map; musical scores, recipes, and scattered quotations also enliven the plain text. There is significant focus on diversity, for instance in photographs and holidays. Supplementary information includes time lines, a list of key people, an events calendar, a brief list of sources for more information, and a complete index. The time line is oddly skewed to the present. With the exceptions of World Wars I and II, no events are listed between 1903 and 1960; however, four events are listed between 2001 and 2007. Similarly, "State Stars" include the contemporary actress Geena Davis but not the jurist Oliver Wendell Holmes. The title will be a useful, up-to-date source of information for school book reports about the state. Reviewer: Cynthia Levinson
School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up-These two books examine the geography, history, industry, tourist and cultural landmarks, and people of their respective states. Well-chosen, full-color photographs of postcard quality complement the clearly written texts. Occasional comments by citizens enliven the factual content. Information boxes highlight unique achievements and famous people. There are recipes for Massachusetts's Indian pudding and Maryland's famous crabcakes. In each volume, a section entitled "State Survey" includes a listing of facts, a time line, the state song, a calendar of celebrations, and brief biographies of famous individuals. The brief lists for further information contain a few books, CD-ROMs or videos, and Web sites. Both titles are interesting reads as well as fine sources of information that will be useful for reports. They are similar in scope to the "America the Beautiful" series (Children's) and would be welcome additions where materials about states are in high demand.-Carol Schene, Taunton Public Schools, MA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
