Dunn's sympathy for, and understanding of, the plight of the Native American was remarkable for his day. Daniel Dary is the author of nine books on the West, including The Santa Fe Trail. He is the recipient of a Cowboy Hall of Fame Wrangler Award, two Western Writers of America Spur Awards, and the Westerners International Best Nonfiction Book Award.

Stackpole is using Dunn's 1886 history of the Indian wars of the American West to launch its "Frontier Classics" series. The books are facsimiles of the originals, with new front matter such as scholarly introductions. This volume, for instance, features a new intro by Western historian David Dary. Many of the titles to be covered have long been available only through rare book dealers for big bucks, so libraries specializing in Western history should keep an eye on this line.
