About the Author

Music historian, composer, and educator Demar Irvine earned his PH.D. in music esthetics from Harvard University. In 1937 he joined the faculty of the University of Washington School of Music in Seattle, becoming professor emeritus in 1978. His death in 1995 was a true loss to the world of music. IrvineÆs previous books include _Methods of Research in Music_ and _Writing About Music._
