This title is part of a series of books that reflects the trend towards a core curriculum and self-directed learning. The content is restricted to the ‘must know' core information presented in a synoptic style. The diagrams that support the text are in a style that the reader can remember and reproduce in examinations. Each chapter ends with a selection of self-assessment material and full explanatory answers. These consolidate and expand on the chapter contents.

• Concise synoptic (not telegraphic text).
• Appropriate self-assessment material.
• Only covers core, so student knows the whole book is essential.
• Includes key objectives.
• Contains simple and memorable diagrams for reproduction in exams.
• Ideal for learning as well as examination review, specifically trying to stimulate the student into assessing his/her own knowledge.
• The books in the series both complement other available major texts, but also contain enough material to stand in the own right.
• Provides examination practice.
• Part of co-ordinated series.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“These books are brilliant for taking on the road out to peripheral hospital placements, and cover all the essentials (plus a little bit more) on all the key topics. They have plenty of information to help explain those topics and subjects you see on the wards/in theatre…When time is a little short, and you simply need fast hard facts in an easy to read yet thorough way these books are simply perfect. I have no doubt in recommending them to my friends or any other medical student"

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: David L. Osborne, PhD (Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center)
Description: This book, part of the Master Medicine series, is designed to present and assess a student's knowledge of core essential material in the field of physiology. This is an update of the second edition published in 2002.
Purpose: It is designed to help students with self assessment, increase their knowledge and understanding, and to help them plan their studying or review. This book is a useful tool for assessing a student's knowledge and defining what a student needs to review, but it is very limited in how much it can help the student increase their actual knowledge base. Given the intent of the book, however, the author has been successful in producing a useful study tool.
Audience: The concept and design of the book is appropriate for the students it is designed to reach. The organization conforms to current educational paradigms where learning objectives are outlined so students can assess their success in achieving these objectives. The only problem I see with this scenario is that the real world seldom issues objectives before a learning event occurs.
Features: The book is well organized and each chapter begins with an overview, followed by material presented in a simple to complex order, followed by assessment tools. The assessment uses questions in a variety of formats: multiple, true/false, single best answer, matching, short answer, modified essay, data interpretation, clinical scenario, and viva.
Assessment: As an assessment tool, this book is very useful for students with a background in physiology, not novice students. This edition is a timely update and is comparable to other reviews of this type, such as the Deja Review series or the PreTest series from McGraw-Hill.
