This new volume of the prestigious Master Techniques in Orthopaedic Surgery series presents the most advanced and successful surgical techniques for treatment of disorders of the shoulder. The book is written by the leading surgeons, who discuss each surgical procedure as if they were working side by side with the readerexplaining the indications and rationale for the procedure, giving step-by-step instructions on technique, identifying pitfalls and potential complications, and offering valuable tips for improving surgical results. This volume is thoroughly illustrated with full-color intraoperative photographs, as well as drawings by a noted medical illustrator and radiographs. A slide set for this volume will also be available.
Description: This series of nine volumes is designed to provide direct detailed access to preferred techniques of surgeons recognized as masters by their colleagues. The CD-ROM version allows video and audio clips and expanded references compared to the standard text.
Purpose: The purpose of this CD-ROM is to gather "masters" in shoulder surgery to allow practitioners the benefit of their learned experience. The CD-ROM has distinct advantages over the text format in that it allows more interactive control of audio and video supplements.
Audience: This CD-ROM is targeted at the primary care provider who is maintaining or expanding his level of knowledge. The Core Curriculum Program has a membership group of primary care providers who continually update their knowledge and obtain CME credit through this interactive CD-ROM or Internet approach.
Features: A broad range of problems related to the foot and ankle, from biomechanical to shoe wear, are explored. Each slide is downloadable to your own carousel and can be accompanied by a transcript of the text. The links to sites on the WWW are beneficial for more in depth study. This product does not take advantage of all of the capabilities of Windows 95 which would allow a simple load, install, and play. Instead users must go through a separate run program. Many of the presentations could be of greater value with less slides and more 3-D or visual images.
Assessment: Using this CD-ROM is like going to a national meeting and attending a series of lectures on topics of the foot and ankle. I found myself going through the entire CD-ROM to see what they would teach me next. Unfortunately, this CD-ROM fails to present surgical interventions or show excellent images of pathology. It is also very biased toward certain sponsors of each lecture. Nonetheless, it is valuable and I would make it available to all residents and medical students.
