From The CriticsReviewer: Martin C. Yorath, DPM (Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science)
Description: This is a graphically illustrated text book of foot and ankle surgery, covering the gamut of podiatric surgical techniques. The 41 chapters are divided into two sections, one devoted to the forefoot, and one to the hindfoot and ankle.
Purpose: The aim is to focus on the execution of surgical techniques. This is much needed in podiatric medicine. While there are several excellent references available, this is the first "how to" guide in a long time for this profession. The book is most definitely warranted, and it fills a niche in the podiatric library.
Audience: The author clearly states that his intended target audience: those for whom the practice of foot and ankle surgery is paramount. Certainly it will be invaluable for those still in training — for students it will help to clarify the more comprehensive reference texts; for residents it will serve as a vital reference; and for practicing foot and ankle surgeons it will provide a much needed rapid reference to what is already familiar ground. Dr. Chang brings his considerable surgical expertise to us and has asked experts from across the spectrum of podiatric surgery to provide their input.
Features: The book covers almost the entire range of commonly practiced foot and ankle surgery. Some of the newer endoscopic techniques are not covered. Ankle arthroscopy, however, is well addressed. Each chapter is well illustrated and the quality of the color photography, as well as the line drawings, is first class. Naturally, these features help the purpose of the book. Each chapter is supported by a short reference section which is quite current.
Assessment: This book, if not "just what the doctor ordered," is most certainly just what the surgeon needs! It sounds trite to say this belongs on the shelf of every foot and ankle surgeon's library, but it does. It is already in our department of surgery library, and in the residents' conference room. I can give no better recommendation than that.
