Description: This excellent book dedicated to the art and craft of abdominal wall hernia surgery is a part of the mini-atlas, Master Techniques in Surgery series.
Purpose: While the time for training of surgical residents is decreasing, surgical techniques and technologies are rapidly expanding. It is of utmost importance to have a solid understanding of anatomy and pathophysiology of hernias to select and perform the optimal operation for a particular patient. A single surgical approach may not work for all hernias and knowledge of both classic and newer approaches, all with their own benefits and deficiencies, is essential. This atlas addresses all these issues.
Audience: This is a useful reference for general surgeons in the beginning of their careers and certainly a very valuable study guide for all surgical residents.
Features: This 400-page book consists of 38 well-illustrated chapters, each focused on a specific open and laparoscopic repair method for a specific type of abdominal wall hernia, including uncommon ones. The authors of the individual chapters are established experts and describe in great detail their preferred methods. The comprehensive book also covers relevant anatomy, postoperative complications, and special circumstances, such as contaminated field and morbid obesity cases. The edition also includes access to an online version and videos of select operations.
Assessment: The up-to-date and in-depth contents of this atlas and textbook make it a worthy addition to the field.
