Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Use Quicken? Suspect you could get more out of it? You’re right. With Master VISUALLY Quicken 2006, you can take a deep breath, dive into Quicken’s more powerful features, and actually make them work for you. If you’re ready to take control of your personal finances, Elaine Marmel identifies the 190-plus Quicken tasks that’ll help you the most. Then, she walks through each one of them, step-by-step. With plenty of photos, you’re not just told what to do, you’re shown.

Whatever topic you’re looking for, the VISUALLY series’ handy two-page spreads make it easy to find. Up front, Marmel shows how to make the most of Guided Setup; create accounts and categories, then manage any checking or credit card account. Wherever something can be automated, Marmel shows how to automate it.

Next, it’s on to Quicken’s “higher brain functions.” You’ll walk through managing property and debt: homes and mortgages, automobiles and insurance, and especially investments. In four detailed chapters, Marmel covers both the easy and the hard stuff -- including establishing the cost basis for securities, monitoring and researching new investments, estimating potential capital gains, even setting asset allocation targets and rebalancing your portfolio.

There are two big bonuses you won’t find in your run-of-the-mill Quicken guide. First, there’s a full section on using Intuit’s sibling product, TurboTax -- including eight pages on the deduction-hunting process. And, for those of us who treat the Internet practically like a new umbilical cord, Marmel offers practical security techniques for protecting personal data -- and our identities. Bill Camarda, from the November 2005 Read Only
