Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Library Journal
Best known from TV's The Biggest Loser, weight-loss guru Michaels presents a well-meaning collection of 125 recipes designed to meet specific health and fitness goals. Though she has no formal training in nutrition, Michaels asserts that most health problems are caused by metabolic hormonal imbalances; charging forward without any cited sources, Michaels includes a list of "amazing health benefits" with each recipe (Roast Herbed Turkey Breast with Orange-Cranberry Sauce, for example, is meant to boost metabolism and immunity, improve mood and digestion, fight cancer, and aid the heart). Dogma and posturing aside, these tasty, healthy recipes are likely to please. Michaels does her best to avoid esoteric ingredients, and dishes like Coconut-Curry Steamed Mussels and Grilled Skirt Steak with Chimichurri Sauce would be right at home in a traditional cookbook. Others, like Watermelon Soup with Blackberries and Jicama, or Ginger Shrimp Rolls with Green Papaya Slaw, won't make dieters feel like they're settling. Less concerned with calories or fat, Michaels emphasizes the benefits of foods like beans (fiber), cranberries (anti-bacterial, gum disease-fighting properties), and cinnamon (helps normalize blood sugar levels); while some claims seem glib ("If you suffer from asthma, eat lots of apples!"), Michaels's suggestions are, at worst, harmless and delicious.

Michaels, strength trainer for The Biggest Loser, is back with recipes to complement her best-selling Master Your Metabolism. Michaels lists ten metabolic hormones (such as thyroid, estrogen, and growth) that may be out of balance in an individual because of poor nutrition and suggests ten power nutrient groups (such as legumes, berries, and organic dairy). She also provides recipes and menus to help put these ideas into practice. Recipes are easy to follow and include nutritional breakdowns (calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, and sodium). Ham and Apple on Grilled Country Bread
Serves 1

Olive oil spray, for the grill pan
2 slices crusty whole- wheat bread, such as boule or country loaf—200 calories
1 1/2 teaspoons Dijon mustard—0 calories
1/4 teaspoon honey—5 calories
1 1/2 ounces thinly sliced organic Black Forest or other smoked ham—90 calories
1/2 ounce reduced- fat Cheddar cheese, thinly sliced—25 calories
1/4 Granny Smith apple, cored and thinly sliced—20 calories
Freshly ground black pepper to taste—0 calories

Spray a grill pan with olive oil and heat over medium- high heat until hot but not smoking. Place the bread slices on the grill and grill until grill marks appear on both sides, about 2 minutes per side. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, place the mustard and honey. Stir with a small spoon until well combined. Place the grilled bread on a work surface and spread the mustard and honey mixture on both slices. On one slice of bread, place the ham, gently folding each slice in thirds to give the sandwich some height. Arrange the cheese slices on top and then the apple slices. Grind some black pepper on the apple. Place the other slice of grilled bread on top. Slice the sandwich in half. Serve.

    Awesome!

I pre-ordered this book and received it in the mail a few days ago. I've already made 5 or 6 meals and loved them. There are many meat-less meals which is great. A good buy for anyone looking for healthy food that don't have too many ingredients and none of them take longer than 30mins!

Awesome recipes - my husband finally eats veggies!!

I picked this book up because I was struggling with taking off weight for the past 7 years. I have always worked out hard, running and training for 5Ks, 10Ks, and 1/2 marathons as well as sprint triathlons, but my metabolism changed and the weight piled on regardless of my diet and work out efforts.
After I bought this book, stripped my kitchen of processed food and followed these recipes based on a 1200 Calorie diet, I dropped 27 lbs over 4 months and have kept my weight off over the holidays. I no longer have food cravings and my family (all grown) is also cooking by this book just to stay healthy! (None of them need to lose weight) Every recipes has been tasty. My husband says he feels like he is eating in a gourmet restaurant.
Every diet I tried over the last 7 years really did not help. Once I lost the weight, I was still eating the same type of processed foods. I feel like we eat "clean" now and feel more energized.

JILLIAN HITS ANOTHER HOME RUN!!! JUST WHAT WE NEEDED TO KEEP US TRAVELING THE JOURNEY.

If you know and love Jillian's books or just dabble in her teachings, you are sure to love this one! It perfectly compliments her other books and is actually a welcome addition to my Jillian library. I find her products well written with enough talking to you not at you. She doesnt try to impress you with too much techinical jargon...she lays it on the table tells you why it is good and trys to educate you without turning you into a chem professor. She is also a big supporter of flavor and believes that food should nourish but it is a heck of alot easier to enjoy when it tastes rich and wonderful...so lets make rich & wonderful that won't kill you!

    Difficult to read print.

The information contained in this cookbook is probably wonderful. However, a cookbook in small typeset and faded color is difficult for someone with low vision to read. Orange print on white or pink pages may be sexy to a layout artist, but the lack of contrast makes it difficult to read. Here's an idea. Instead of presenting recipes and paragraphs of information in orange, and bullet points and paragraph headers in black, reverse it. You might even consider a large print edition in black print.

    Needs Inspiration

While the information contained is good it is not easy to get "involved" in the recipes. We felt the lack of pictures of the finished dishes discerning. It would be helpful to see what the finished dish looked like before trying.

I haven't purchased this book yet, but I have her Body Revolutio

I haven't purchased this book yet, but I have her Body Revolution dvd set and it came with a 90 day meal plan that contains 10 breakfast, 15 lunches, and 15 dinners from this book and so far they are amazing. I will be purchasing this book now that I've had a sample of it. All the recipes are yummy, they aren't too time consuming and use minimum ingredients. If you're serioius about changing your diet without compromising on taste you should definietly get this!
