"For the artist/writer who is seriously interested in creating comics, both books in this series are a must-have resource."—Children's Literature

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
Creating comics is a serious business. This textbook is a follow-up to the authors’ first book, Drawing Words and Writing Pictures, which introduced the art of designing comics to beginners with little experience. This advanced textbook builds on the advice contained in the first, and it is probably better for readers to work through the initial book before tackling this one. Make no mistake about it: this is a big, detailed textbook written by professionals. Its intended audience is diverse: students in high school and college; public school teachers; college professors; and intermediate-level cartoonists. Self-taught cartoonists are welcome, but there is one thing that anyone interested in this book must have, and that is a serious dedication to the profession. Those who enjoy dabbling in comics will no doubt find helpful hints (the book is well organized and has an excellent index), but this book is for budding professionals. The primary goal is to show how one can write and draw a ten- or twelve-page comic book and self-publish it. There are five units. Teachers can teach from one or from all of them; the entire book can be covered in a traditional 15-week college semester. This is a comprehensive textbook, and there is far too much information in it to try to encapsulate it here. Suffice it to say that just about any aspect one might be interested in is covered, from lettering, to scriptwriting, to inking tools, to basic color theory. The authors provide extra activities, homework assignments, and suggestions for further reading. They also supply guidance on webcomics and manga. For the artist/writer who is seriously interested in creating comics, both books in this series are a must-have resource. Reviewer: Leona Illig; Ages 16 up.

These two inclusive guides for cartoonists are set up as workbooks, covering principles and providing lessons and exercises that readers can work through. Drawing is suitable for beginners, while Mastering is aimed more at intermediate and experienced cartoonists. Both volumes could be used as college texts for courses on sequential art.
