Spatters of a Life: Chapter 3

Burnedshard raced back to camp, carrying Thrushpaw. "Help!" she yowled, causing heads to turn her way. "BirchClan's attacking!"
Hazelstar looked at her in surprise, then threw a look at Smokeshade. "I'll deal with you later. Flarefang, Gorsejump, watch him. Ashpaw, stay by your mentor. All other warriors, come with me!" With that, she bounded out into the forest, the warriors following.
As they raced to battle, a scent drifted to Burnedshard, familiar but unidentifiable. It irritated her when she couldn't place scents. 'I know I've smelled this before!'
Hazelstar didn't bother to pause before she flung herself on a BirchClan warrior. The other warriors followed her lead, throwing themselves at the invaders. "Stay back!" Burnedshard hissed, slashing at the nose of one she-cat. The smell of blood quickly filled the air as warriors and apprentices raked their claws over their opponents' pelts.
Burnedshard had just managed to send her opponent running when a weight landed on her back. A single claw dragged down her spine, and in the midst of battle, a deep voice whispered in her ear.
"I remember you. You were the little kit he was traveling with."
Burnedshard finally placed the scent and nearly froze in fear. 'It's Shardflight's father...! The rogues are helping BirchClan!'
She struggled under him, but he held her down easily, yawning. "Where is my son? Hand him over and we'll leave you alone. Can't say the same of BirchClan, but still..."
"He left!" she spat. "A quarter moon ago! He's not here!"
She felt him tense in surprise. "Wha—? No. You're lying!" He pulled all his claws slowly down her spine. "Where is he?!"
She bit back a yowl of pain. "It's true! Do you see him fighting here?"
After what seemed like forever, the huge tom...laughed. Hysterically. "Of course he's not! Of course he's run yet again! What kind of a fool am I?"
He got off and bounded away, barking orders for the other rogues to follow. They did, and, seeing them go, the BirchClan leader yowled, "Retreat! Back to camp!"
The battle, hardly started, was over. Of course there were wounds to show it had happened, but it hadn't happened long.
As the cats trekked back to camp, Hazelstar went beside Burnedshard. "You seemed to be acquainted with the rogue leader. Would you care to explain?"
Burnedshard hesitated. How much should she tell Hazelstar? After all, there was a chance Shardflight would come back. Would he be allowed if Hazelstar knew the rogue leader was his father?
Finally she answered, "That's the rogue that attacked our...my old Clan. He ambushed us just before we got here."
Hazelstar nodded. "I wasn't sure. Please don't think I don't trust you."
"I don't."
As they approached camp, Burnedshard thought she smelled blood. Her pace quickened just a bit. She was first in camp, but she couldn't quite react to what she was seeing.
The others came in, also freezing in their tracks at what lay before them.
A skinny gray tom stood over the near-dead forms of Flarefang, Ashpaw, and Smokeshade, and Gorsejump's corpse. Burnedshard stared at the rogue, wondering why he seemed familiar, but as the warriors returned, he dashed off, leaping out of the ravine the camp was in. He was long gone before anyone realized.
So. Everything's happening kind of fast. Aren't character limits great? Anywho...I think I can get the next chapter out before Saturday. I'm psychic about this kind of thing. Blast, no more characters. Grr.
