Editorial Reviews

The Barnes & Noble Review
Between two hard covers, here's everything you need to know about HTML and related technologies. Of course, all the meat-and-potatoes HTML stuff is here: creating numbered and bulleted lists, setting base locations for a document, spanning tables... just about anything you'd want to learn for the first time or have handy for reference. But Mastering Html 4 Premium Edition is broader than just HTML: it's really a complete guide to developing Web sites.

For example, the forms coverage doesn't just explain tags, it offers great high-level design techniques for creating forms folks will actually use. There's thoughtful coverage of the HTML document lifecycle: planning, developing, publishing, testing, and maintaining your pages for maximum efficiency. There's another chapter on making sure your site actually hangs together coherently — creating theme-bearing elements, making your site navigable, and balancing flash with usability.

There's a chapter on using JavaScript (including the basics of rollovers and cookies); and another on generating HTML from databases — both static pages and live views of the database. The coup de grâce: a full section on XML, including the basics of building your own DTDs. There's even a chapter on XHTML, the new draft standard that could eventually allow developers to leverage XML's power and flexibility on existing HTML pages, without compromising browser support.

Mastering Html 4 Premium Edition also includes a 400-page, comprehensive "Master's Reference" covering every HTML tag and attribute;cascadingstyle sheets; scripting; HTML special characters and color codes; even the XML 1.0 spec. You couldn't ask for a more complete web development reference. —Bill Canarda

The authors have succeeded in creating a rarity: a book that can function as a learning guide, reference, and jumping off point for further study. Despite its title, the book not only covers HTML throughly and also provides an introduction to XML, JavaScript, XHTML, DHTML and other Web technologies. Everything is written in clear language and is well-illustrated. If you're looking for an HTML 'big book,' you need not look further.
