Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Our Review
In these 1,200 pages, a pair of longtime SQL Server consultants and MCSEs offers practical insight into every aspect of SQL Server 2000: architecture, core components, administration, Transact-SQL, development, analysis services, optimization, security, and more.

Mike Gunderloy and Joseph Jorden start with three quick "overview tours": one for DBAs, one for developers, and one for users. If you're new to enterprise-class databases, you'll find an easy-to-understand review of key concepts such as tables, keys, and indexes.

The authors offer a cogent introduction to Transact-SQL that carries you from the basics all the way to transactions, rowset functions, cursors, and information schema views. You'll find detailed chapters on SQL Server Enterprise Manager, Microsoft's tool for managing the objects on all your SQL Server systems; on tables, indexing, and views; and on both stored procedures and triggers. There's a 50-page chapter on automating SQL Server administration covering everything from backups to index reconstruction, from user-defined alerts to SQL Mail, which can answer queries sent by email.

Developers will find detailed coverage of data access via ADO, SQL-DMO and SQL Namespace, integration with Microsoft's IIS web server, and especially Data Transformation Services, Microsoft's powerful tool for moving and transforming data from a variety of OLE DB data sources. From replication to optimization, analysis services to Microsoft's thoroughly revamped English Query feature, this book covers it -- expertly, and in detail.
