Meet the Author

Stan Gibilisco (Deadwood, SD) write books, magazine articles, and technical papers about general science, mathematics, electronics, and computing. He has worked as a technical writer in industry, as a radio engineer, and as a magazine editor. One of Stan’s books, Encyclopedia of Electronics (TAB Books, 1985), was named by the American Library Association (ALA) in its list of "Best References of the 1980s." Another of his books, McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Personal Computing (McGraw-Hill, 1995), was named as a "Best Reference of 1996" by the ALA. In recent years, he has written 14 volumes for the McGraw-Hill "DeMYSTified" series.

    Practical and sensible mathematics

    I have all three editions of this book, way back to Norman Crowhurst's original. The second edition was better than the first because the quiz problems were solved in the appendix! This third edition is better still. There's new material, and the solutions appendix is a huge bonus. Now I have to say something about Dr. Gibilisco's books in general. He writes about the way things happen in the real world, and not just textbook theory. For example, my deck has ice that has dripped from the overhanging eaves and frozen solid. It's a foot deep next to the house. It tapers off to zero depth at 30 inches from the house. The deck is 20 feet wide and extends 10 feet out from the house. It is built to support two metric tons of weight. Should I worry that the deck will collapse because of the ice? If not, how much more ice could collect on it before I should worry? If you have read Dr. Gibilisco's physics and geometry books, you would know how to figure that out in your head, or with a small calculator, anyhow. That's a real-world sort of problem. And it's the real world we live in, after all, not a classroom.
