Overview

Quilters learn how to recreate the motion and texture of the author's popular namesake stitch as they follow along with this fully illustrated handbook and DVD. Inspired by the art nouveau movement's Alfonse Mucha, this freehand, background filler quilting design has electrified the quilting community. Dubbed "McTavishing," after its creator, it has become the most popular new design concept in quilting today. As shown in the 25 illustrated projects, McTavishing may be added to any quilt or garment, from wholecloth to contemporary art quilts, and done by hand, domestic machine, or longarm technique. The book's seven how-to chapters demonstrate the uses of the McTavishing stitch—as an addition to an open quilt block, in a border, to highlight complex applique, custom tailor a favorite garment, or as part of a larger overall design—while the accompanying DVD provides lessons from the author. Accompanied by interviews with accomplished hand and domestic machine quilters, this guide offers readers an unparalleled view of the exciting new quilting process.

    Great Book on Free-Motion Quilting

If you can do a little free-motion quilting, but are looking for more grace, this is the book. Karen McTavish teaches a no-mark free-hand machine quilting technique.
I had done some freehand quilting, but I was unsure exactly how to do it, since I am not able to go to a class. I really appreciated the DVD, which showed Karen and others working on real machines. I got a good idea of how to start by locking threads, how fast to go, how much backtracking I could get away with, and how to mark a guiding line with stitches. Watching the women demonstrate their individual styles gave me the confidence to try it myself, and reassured me that what I was doing was OK if it worked for me!
The basic McTavishing technique is better for heavy filling-in and flattening background areas. It looks like a good thing to use on an appliqued or trapunto quilt, to get the design to pop up in the unquilted areas. I found it a bit too dense for my patched quilts, but I was able to apply ideas fron the book to make my own, looser, space-fillers look better. I also learned a lot from Karen's method for free-hand feathers. So even though I do not follow her directions exactly, my quilting is much better because of the ideas I have adapted.
