Description: This is the client workbook to a two-part set that focuses on the cognitive-behavioral treatment program for clients with ADHD. This is an evidence-based treatment for adult ADHD which was designed and implemented by clinical investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Purpose: The purpose of this workbook and the set is to provide an evidence-based treatment program for adult ADHD, and to give the client the tools necessary to work on managing ADHD symptoms. The clinical team who designed this program sought an adjunctive cognitive-behavioral treatment in addition to traditional pharmacotherapy. Given the prevalence of adult ADHD, this workbook is timely and meets not only the authors', but also the reader's objectives.
Audience: The workbook is for any adult ADHD client who has a clinician well versed in cognitive-behavioral therapy. The client's workbook and the therapist's guide work in tandem to give the client tasks to work on outside of the therapist's office. The authors and researchers involved in this program are unquestionably experts in the field.
Features: The entire program is well thought out. The therapist guide allows for the therapist to give the client verbal information while the workbook acts to substantiate the verbal in the form of written exercises with emphasis on key ADHD areas such as low attention spans. The client is given the key information about the program in the first three chapters. The more substantial information comes in the subsequent chapters which cover such topics as organization of multiple tasks, organizing papers, modifying one's environment, etc. This is a user-friendly and excellent resource and tool for the client to use and, more importantly, refer back to.
Assessment: This is an excellent workbook for the adult ADHD client. The value of this work cannot be measured. Highly recommended!

Meet the Author

Steven A. Safren, Ph.D. is the Associate Director of the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Program and the Director of the Behavioral Medicine Service at Massachusetts General Hospital, and is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School. Carol A. Perlman, Ph.D. received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida and is a Clinical Assistant in Psychology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Instructor in Psychology at Harvard Medical School, and Project Director at the Harvard University Department of Psychology. Susan Sprich, Ph.D. received her doctorate in clinical psychology from the State University of New York at Albany. She is a Clinical Assistant in Psychology at Massachusetts General Hospital and an Instructor in Psychology at Harvard Medical School. Michael W. Otto, Ph.D. helped develop the Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, (MGH) serving as director of the program and Associate Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School. He is now a Professor of Psychology at Boston University.

    Living with Adult ADHD

    Excellent work appealing to a wide variety of audiences. The language used was comprehensible and limited the amount of "doctor" language. Very easy to follow and informative for me. I have been living with ADHD all my life and didn't know until this year. Living with ADHD is so difficult because you begin too many projects and leave them unfinished. This leaves me overwhelmed and having a low self esteem. This book was a good guidepost to remedying my ADHD. Thank you.
