Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
As first director of the German museum founded in 1961, Schmalenbach sought to create a collection of modern masterpieces. He purchased works of very high quality but did not feel bound to acquire examples of every style and period. The collection, considered one of the finest in 20th-century art, is therefore imbued with a passion and personality often missing in museums built by committee. The book, which displays the same fervor, presents each work in loosely chronological order, perhaps because the author feels we are too close in time to the works to objectively codify historical substyles. The excellent marriage between text and illustration makes up for an inevitable lack of comprehensiveness. For larger collections.-- Daniel J. Lom bardo, Jones Lib., Inc., Amherst, Mass.
