Overview

This beautiful volume features a compendium of the Metropolitan Museum’s finest European paintings dating from 1800 to 1920. The focus is on French art of this period—of which the Museum possesses the most comprehensive collection outside of France—but extraordinary pictures by artists of other nationalities are also included. Thanks to a succession of generous and discerning donors—

from the H. O. Havemeyers to the Walter H. Annenbergs—this publication presents a history of painting in Paris from Prud’hon to Picasso, by way of Delacroix, Corot, Courbet, Manet, Monet, Degas, Cézanne, Seurat, and many others.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

This volume contains stunning, high-quality reproductions of works from the invaluable European collection of New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art. It covers more than 60 artists from nine countries, among them André Breton, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Édouard Manet, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, and Paul Signac. An introduction by Tinterow, a longtime curator at the museum, and contributions from four other curators and a research associate add to the book's appeal. Further improving the experience for both the casual reader and the serious researcher are the documentation of history of ownership and exhibitions, provision of provenance information, and availability of useful bibliographies for each painting featured. Ultimately, however, it is the paintings themselves and their truly beautiful reproductions that rule the pages and make this a wonderful addition to any specialized art or academic library collection.
