Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 7 UpSpanning the gamut from William Steig's delightful picture book Doctor De Soto to Boris Pasternak's masterful epic of love and revolution, Doctor Zhivago, (and even finding room for Issac Asimov's Breakthroughs in Science and Ntozake Shange's for colored girls...), this set of supplements to the series is a welcome addition to reference shelves. The summaries of everything from plays to poetry collections and science books are concise, unbiased, and easy to scan. The two- to-three page articles include form and content, analysis, and critical context. These articles are preceded by pertinent information: author, type of work (novel, nonfiction, short story collection, etc.), a brief (two-to-three line) summary of the plot, and a list of principle characters. The entire series (including the biography series, YA literature series, and the YA fiction series) is comprehensively indexed in volume three by title, author, subject, and biographical subject. These books are as helpful to librarians as they are to students.Herman Sutter, Saint Pius X High School, Houston, TX
Booknews
Expands the coverage of children's and young adult literature found in the four-volume "Masterplots II: Juvenile and Young Adult Fiction Series" (1991), and the four-volume "Masterplots II: Juvenile and Young Adult Biography Series" (1993). In addition to articles on more novels and biographical works, the supplement reviews other important literary forms, including<-->for the first time<-->poetry collections, plays, short-story collections, and books on art, history, sociology, and science. As in the first two sets, the 377 articles in the supplement include sections on format and content, analysis and critical context, and provide a broad range of titles by genre, time period, culture, country, and subject matter.
