Overview

The Masterplots poetry series is an essential tool for anyone researching individual poems. In this revised edition, numerous contributors from American colleges and universities write about 1,386 frequently anthologized poems, 271 more poems than the first edition and its supplement (1992 & 1998). The Masterplots II series contains different poems than the 12-volume Masterplots revised second edition (1996), but the 1996 edition's titles are conveniently listed in this new publication. Women make up 99 of the 433 poets covered. Each 3-page entry has three parts<-->general comments, forms and devices, themes and meanings<-->preceeded by the poet's name and date(s), type of poem, and date of first publication. Volume eight contains the following appendices: a sufficient prosodic glossary that usually includes a few illustrative examples; a bibliography of general works on poetry, and individualized bibliographies for each poet. Multiple indexes list poems by title, author, geographical/ethnic region (6 continents and 4 US ethnic groups), and type of poem (18 in all, including ballad, mock epic, and verse essay). Poems are not reprinted here. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
