Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Many of the paintings in the Werner and Gabrielle Merzbacher Collection, and this exhibition catalog from a show at London's Royal Academy of Arts, have been seen before in major Fauve and German Expressionist exhibitions the world over. One of the finest modern art collections in the world, the Merzbacher Collection is composed of paintings united by their formal expression through intense color and painted by such notables as Klee, Kandinsky, Picasso, and Cezanne. Rauchum (curator, Israel Museum) writes of the excellent quality of the art that dates back to the genesis of the collection in the early 1900s. Art historian Gage discusses the importance of color in the early decades of the 20th century, stressing, however, that the Merzbacher Collection reflects a passion for the use of pure color, texture, and paint rather than any theoretical interest in color. At the back of the book is a complete catalog, written by a diverse group of art historians, of every painting in the collection, with provenance, exhibition, bibliographic information, and color illustrations. This collection is known to the scholarly community, as many of its works have been lent to major exhibitions on Fauvism and German expressionism, but this is the only book focused on the collection as a whole. This excellent documentation is recommended for all libraries that collect books on art.-Sandra Rothenberg, Framingham State Coll. Lib., MA Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
