Preface

Preface

I am your tour guide on this fascinating journey into the Wired World. I promise it will be a worthwhile trip and one to remember and revisit over the years to come.

I have had the great privilege of doing the route planning for this book and in doing so I gathered the key thinkers who I believe will make our journey meaningful and exciting. I went hunting for the Masters who could help us make sense of this fast-changing chaotic world. And I found quite a few scattered around our globe. This is not a coincidental selection; all the contributors in this book have been carefully selected to fill in a particular part of the Wired World picture. No doubt the picture is incomplete, and there are many more perspectives and other thinkers we should seek to include to extend our knowledge-map of the Wired World. In our hearts and minds we need to travel beyond our own culture and reality if we want to build a truly Global Information Society. Only then will we comprehend the global potential of the Wired World and what it means to individual people and organizations on the local level.

However, for this book and for this single journey, I bring you the most wonderful collection of premium local experts who will introduce you to their respective fields of knowledge. We will visit lots of sites of global relevance. We will look at high-level policy development and the changing geo-political order of the world. We willexamine the emerging knowledge-based economy and the fast-moving technology underpinning it all. We will identify the impact on legal and regulatory regimes. We will explore the changing market environment and opportunities for business development. We will look at what this could mean for you and me, and for people around the world.

I will take you to visit the minds of our political leaders as well as leading representatives from the marketplace and different industries. We will be exposed to some of the twentieth—century great visionaries and social commentators. We will also meet inventors, ambitious politicians, successful business leaders and dedicated humanitarians. They are all Masters of the Wired World in their own particular way.

They will share their expertise and experience, their thoughts and visions for the Wired World and the future ahead. Together they paint a rich landscape of our New World. I hope this book will provide you with a useful overview and some essential food for thought to stimulate you in your own life, wherever you may be. Enjoy - and have a good journey!
