Reviewer: Peter Nau, MD, MS (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: Drs. Swanstrom and Soper have edited the fourth edition of their text discussing the minimally invasive approaches to common abdominal pathology. Taking an organ- systems-based approach, the editors recruit many of the authorities in the field of laparoscopic surgery to outline the pre-operative work up, key operative steps and post-operative care of a variety of different cases. The previous edition of this book was last published in 2009.
Purpose: The editors have highlighted common clinical scenarios and the laparoscopic or endoscopic management of these cases. They have recruited many of the world's experts to provide their clinical acumen and to cite the available literature to give the reader a primer on the care of different intra-abdominal pathologies. This is an excellent text that is both concise and inclusive. Notwithstanding the preponderance of videos and information available to today's surgeon, a text like this remains a valuable asset for the preparation of a variety of cases.
Audience: The target audience for this book is quite broad. It is written in such a way that a senior resident or fellow would benefit from it. In addition, a newer surgeon may use this as a primer for a case that he or she does not routinely perform.
Features: This is an inclusive text which addresses many of the common clinical scenarios that a general surgeon would address laparoscopically. Each section covers the common pathologies seen for a particular organ system. Within each chapter, the authors discuss the underlying pathology, pre-op work up and operative indications of each condition. The text then identifies key operative steps and anticipated post-operative outcomes including the management of complications. In each case, the steps of the operation are illustrated or pictures are provided as adjuncts. The strength of the text is the stepwise approach to each condition.
Assessment: This is an excellent text that I would recommend to most senior residents and certainly to all fellows in minimally-invasive surgery. While it is not intended to provide an in-depth discussion on each condition, it is an excellent resource for the work up of various clinical scenarios and preparation for the operating room. It is edited by two of the most well respected minimally-invasive surgeons and with chapters written by many equally accomplished experts. In this edition, the text remains current in its concentration of new techniques such as POEM and NOTES. There are certainly more inclusive or focused texts available to today's surgeon. Few, however, will provide the focused, evidence-based approach to the subject matter that this book offers.
