Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Miguel A. Oviedo, MD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This third edition of Mastery of Surgery contains two new chapters and has added 300 pages to the book.
Purpose: The editors are trying to reach the general surgeon, providing a comprehensive text with a broad cross-section of what the general surgeon is apt to encounter. The book meets the editors' objectives.
Audience: The authors address their audience of general surgeons and residents with a well-organized and comprehensive review of general surgery. The three editors are international authorities in their respective fields and they have assembled more than 200 contributors. They have selected "masters" in their fields.
Features: Drs. Nyhus and Baker have added Dr. Josef E. Fischer as a third editor, thus expanding the scope of the book, and have brought back previous authors to update their respective chapters. The illustrations and photographs are of good quality, pertinent, and of sufficient quantity to enhance the educational purpose of the book. Each chapter has a brief summary, a good suggested reading list, and a very helpful editor's comment. The table of contents and the index make the investigation of different topics quite easy and both are well organized. The overall appearance of the two volumes is excellent.
Assessment: This is a quality book, useful for practicing surgeons and residents. I strongly recommend it to medical libraries, bookstores, and all general surgeons. This third edition presents a new spectrum of operations, newer techniques, and videoscopic surgery. A real "Mastery of Surgery."
