Description: This is a compilation of current U.K. practices regarding nutrition for women during pregnancy and breast feeding. The first edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: The purpose is to challenge U.K. academics and healthcare professionals to become more strategically engaged with government agendas to bring about fundamental changes required to ensure that women have the information, resources, and support to feed themselves and their infants to optimize health outcomes.
Audience: The book is written for U.K. healthcare professionals, although there are a few U.S. authors and the guidelines are based on World Health Organization recommendations.
Features: Because it covers U.K. practices and recommendations, much of the information does not apply to U.S. healthcare practice. One chapter discusses weight monitoring, which is a well-established practice in the U.K., but not in the U.S. Another chapter discusses baby-led weaning, a term that's become familiar in the U.K. since the first edition. The book does include tables that compare U.S. and U.K. nutrient recommendations and it does a good job giving a global review of maternal and child nutrition, but it does not necessarily present U.S. guidelines and best practices.
Assessment: While this is an interesting book, it is not appropriate for U.S. students or healthcare professionals.
