About the Author

Vincenzo Berghella, MD, FACOG, is Director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Director of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program, and Professor with tenure in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. A former President of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, he is also Editor-in-Chief for the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Maternal Fetal Medicine (AJOG MFM), Associate Editor of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AJOG), and on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine. He is also Associate Editor for the Cochrane Review, Deputy Editor for UpToDate, and Oral Examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology: Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

Description: This third edition of a comprehensive protocol book highlighting common complications in obstetrics includes web access to an online version, an improvement on previous editions.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a quick and easy reference on complicated obstetrical topics. The authors even provide guidance on how to read their book. Online is the way to go, and the online content replicates the print version.
Audience: The audience is maternal-fetal medicine specialists, residents, and students interested in the approach to medical complications. The material is easily digestible for all levels of learners and the editor is one of the most respected names in the field.
Features: Although this is an obstetrics book, it approaches the subject from the angle of complicated medical problems. It would be just as at home on the shelf of an internal medicine physician. Conditions ranging from hepatitis and HIV to thyroid disorders are some examples of medical conditions that are not unique to pregnancy. However, pregnancy presents unique challenges and this book aims to educate in this area. The topics are heavily researched; for example, the discussion of inflammatory bowel disease includes the extensive research into the medications and the evidence supporting (or not supporting) testing measures. Important points are highlighted in bold and each subject includes "key points."
Assessment: This is an excellent resource with quick and easy protocols. It has more information than a typical protocol collection, although it is not as easy to read as other books. The online option is a must with newer books, but the login process is difficult. However, the editor is one of the most respected names in the field and this book has a permanent spot on my shelf..
