Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Robin Webb Corbett, PhD, RN C(East Carolina University)
Description: This book for nursing students and staff nurses who are directly involved in the care of obstetric patients presents the information in a fun and actively engaging style.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive source of information and facilitate learning via a variety of methods, all while actively engaging readers. The book is concise and succinct in its review of important material specific to maternal neonatal nursing. While there are many reference books or textbooks in this area, this is a review of "just the facts."
Audience: It is intended for staff nurses and nursing students seeking to learn maternal-neonatal nursing in a comprehensive but succinct and lively presentation.
Features: The book is divided into maternal and neonatal sections. Information is bulleted and identified as advice from the experts, patient teaching tips and checklists, bridging the gap for cultural sensitivity, and application of evidence-based practice for ease of use. Tables, flowcharts, and colorful illustrations are pertinent and helpful in understanding the content. In addition, a CD with more than 250 NCLEX style questions is included. Cartoon characters draw attention to important material. A limitation of this presentation is that the "why" of interventions is not addressed.
Assessment: This basic review of maternal-neonatal nursing is excellent as an informative guide for those reviewing or beginning a basic introduction to the area. Its lively and varied presentation of the material keeps learners engaged.
