Overview

Who says math can’t be funny? In Math Jokes 4 Mathy Folks, Patrick Vennebush dispels the myth of the humorless mathematician. His quick wit comes through in this incredible compilation of jokes and stories. Intended for all math types, Math Jokes 4 Mathy Folks provides a comprehensive collection of math humor, containing over 400 jokes. It’s a book that all teachers from elementary school through college should have in their library. But the humor isn’t just for the classroom—it also appeals to engineers, statisticians, and other math professionals searching for some good, clean, numerical fun. From basic facts (“Why is 6 afraid of 7?”) to trigonometry (“Mathematical puns are the first sine of dementia”) and algebra (“Graphing rational functions is a pain in the asymptote”), no topic is safe. As Professor Jim Rubillo notes, “Math Jokes 4 Math Folks is an absolute gem for anyone dedicated to seeing mathematical ideas through puns, double meanings, and blatant “bad” jokes. Such perspectives help to see concepts and ideas in different and creative ways.”

Math Jokes 4 Mathy Folks is an absolute gem for anyone dedicated to seeing mathematical ideas through puns, double meanings, and blatant “bad” jokes. Such perspectives help to see concepts and ideas in different and creative ways.
– Jim Rubillo, Professor Emeritus, Bucks County Community College, Newtown, PA

I thought I knew every math joke in the world, but this book proved otherwise. The jokes in this book are well-chosen and cover a wide spectrum, from jokes for kids to jokes for math majors, from corny to thought-provoking.
– Art Benjamin, Professor and Mathemagician, Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, CA

This is a book that every math teacher from elementary school through college should have in their classroom library. Who said math can’t be funny?
– Victoria Miles, Teacher, Abigail Adams Middle School, Weymouth, MA

Patrick Vennebush has put together the most comprehensive set of mathematical jokes I have ever seen. If you like math and you like jokes — or if you need a joke to liven up an otherwise dull and boring lecture — then you need to buy this book.
– Guy Brandenburg, Retired Teacher, Alice Deal Junior High School, Washington, DC

Math Jokes 4 Mathy Folks is not your typical joke book. Armed with this versatile text, I can imagine math teachers using jokes from this book in the classroom to help students visualize math concepts, and then using it later in the day to entertain friends, thus proving that math folks know how to have a good time, too!
– Latrenda Knighten, Elementary Mathematics Coach, East Baton Rouge Parish School District

Math nerds and punsters rejoice! This is the book you’ve been waiting for — your perfect source for that one-liner to impress your girlfriend, boyfriend, or 8th-grade math teacher.

I haven’t laughed so hard since I discovered that imaginary numbers are just numbers with a not-so-real complex. Enjoy!

Editorial Reviews

Mathematics Teacher
"Math Jokes 4 Mathy Folks is a delightful read. […] I highly recommend this book as a diversion from the rigor of mathematics. It allows us to have a good laugh (or a long groan) at a joke that only “math nerds” would get, and it points out that humor can be found in all mathematical applications, even a telescoping series."

The beauty of this book is that there are jokes that a first grader will find hilarious and others that a professor in a math related field will chuckle over. There is something for everyone at every level

“It takes all types” is the common cliché, and people whose lives revolve around the use of math are a type unto themselves. That’s why G. Patrick Vennebush has collected Math Jokes 4 Mathy Folks [...] Teachers in particular will enjoy and want to use this book, of course, but it will provide lots of laughs for anyone else whose work involves working the numbers. It is also proof they can be very funny, too.

This is a great book with lots of great jokes. It's not a read from cover to cover kind of book... instead, pick it up occasionally, read a couple of jokes, chuckle, then put it down and come back later. The jokes cover the gamut from silly jokes for elementary kids to complicated jokes for mathematicians. The good news is that there's something for everyone in this book; the bad news is that you may not understand all of the jokes. But that's okay... most are just good, clean, mathy fun.

It’s a treasure-trove of math-related jokes with a huge range of material, from wordplay to lightbulb jokes to visual gags to longer stories, from elementary to graduate level mathematics, from corny to subtle. Truly there’s something here for everyone! Patrick has also started a blog as an extension of the book, which “contains jokes submitted by readers, new jokes discovered by the author, details about speaking appearances & workshops, & other random bits of information.
