School Library Journal

Gr 1-2
These titles are similar to those in the "Math in My World" series (Children's Press), but directed to slightly older children. Girls of various ethnicities dominate the clear color photos. Store deals with the concepts of a dozen, subtraction, quarts and gallons, and dimes. Backyard discusses comparative lengths, sunrise and sunset, multiplication, and estimation. Kitchen explains how to double a recipe to make a chocolate cake for 12 people. Neighborhood , in a very cursory way, discusses measurements for building houses, the angle of a ramp, shapes, a map grid, and bus timetables. Playground talks about shapes, addition, comparative weight, and length measurement. All of the concepts are discussed superficially, which in some cases can lead to confusion. In Kitchen , for example, the statement "1/4 + 1/4=1/2 cup" is given without further explanation. Inexperienced children will wonder why the answer is not 2/8. Playground says, "Yesterday, Ella jumped 53 times. Today she jumped 6 times more than that. How many times did she jump?" The facing page has the equation "53+6=?" but the initial statement is ambiguous. Questions are posed on many of the pages, and the answers appear at the end of the books. While these titles attempt to show children the use of math in the real world, many of the concepts are too advanced for the target audience, and the explanations are too simplified.-Lynda Ritterman, Atco Elementary School, NJ
