Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - RevaBeth Russell
Everything that matters about matter is in this book. Matter is transparent, and, if you do not know what that means, the books adds "(see through)." I found the descriptions well done. "To get an idea of how small the nucleus is, imagine this: If a hydrogen atom were about 4 miles wide, its nucleus would be less than the size of a tennis ball" (page 31). Readers will learn the difference between physical and chemical changes, who discovered which elements, and how the periodic table works. The book is very current, mentioning the lead in toys made in China and ozone health hazards. There is a good introduction to nano technology. Throughout the book, clear explanations of chemical reactions, balancing equations, and other processes are found. There are some mini experiments to try as you read. I loved the little side bars, making the information relevant. Now I know why I put baking soda on ant and bee sings: It neutralizes the acid in the poison of these insects. This is a book that belongs in the hands of young adults as they start scientific studies. Science is so fun, and books such as this one keep it that way. Reviewer: RevaBeth Russell

Gr 4-8

Simple and straightforward discussions of the subjects. The layout of both books is attractive and inviting, with full-color photographs and/or diagrams on almost every spread. In addition, the authors make good use of fact boxes. In Forces and Motion , readers are introduced to contact forces, forces at work, simple machines, motion and gravity, etc. Matter discusses the states of matter, the elements, chemical reactions, and more. Both titles will interest browsers and provide ample information for reports.-Maren Ostergard, King County Library System, Issaquah, WA
