Overview

A New York edge permeates Matters of Time, the second release by Clay Jenkins on the L.A.-based Jazz Compass label. Now a professor at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, Jenkins is a commanding trumpeter who channels references from Freddie Hubbard to Kenny Wheeler and projects a warm, glowing tone through all registers of his horn. Here he convenes tenor saxophonist Rich Perry and pianist Harold Danko, both Big Apple first-callers, with well-regarded L.A. drummer Steve Houghton and bassist Bob Bowman. Their six instrumentals, performed with a go-for-broke attitude, include three diverse originals by Jenkins, a Tristano-school "Cherokee" variant by Danko, Thelonious Monk's gnarly "Trinkle Tinkle," and Thad Jones's ebullient blues "Kids Are Pretty People." Vocalist Karrin Allyson, Bowman's frequent employer, brings her husky, lived-in alto voice, intuitive timing, elastic phrasing, and clear articulation to "Yesterdays" and "In Love in Vain" -- the latter featuring a creative set of trumpet-vocalese exchanges -- from the Jerome Kern songbook. A superior recording.
