Editorial Reviews

Canadian Materials - Lorraine Douglas
These whimsical and droll stories appeal to kids' humour and love of the unexpected. The full color cartoon style illustrations perfectly match the playful spirit of the wacky stories. The pages are a larger size than the original and have nice touches in the page design like the tow truck or turkey or money bucket decorative elements by the page numbers. This volume is an excellent value for libraries wishing to refurbish their "Matthew" collections, and it will introduce a new generation of kids to these enjoyable stories. Highly Recommended.
Children's Literature
This anthology is comprised of three stories about young Matthew and his unbelievably terrific midnight adventures¾"Matthew and the Midnight Tow Truck," "Matthew and the Midnight Turkeys," and "Matthew and the Midnight Money Van." All of these stories are full of humor, warmth and creativity. Readers will delight in the three midnight adventures of Matthew and wish that they could experience such extreme fantasy. Matthew goes riding about town in a tow truck, collecting cars for trading. He digs a huge hole in the garden to trap very silly turkeys that sing about underwear, order pizza and make breakfast. And, he sweeps pennies off the street after a money downpour, so that he can shop at the midnight madness mall sale for a perfect Mother's Day gift. The text is full of fun and the pen and ink illustrations capture it all. Parents will appreciate the enduring patience of Matthew's single mother who tolerates with love her spirited and highly imaginative little boy. 2001, Annick Press, $19.95. Ages 5 to 9.
