Maui Weekly
THE BEST OF THEM ALL
This book has been a wonderful eye-opener for me. I suppose like many people, I was inclined to think that OUTDOORS on Maui meant ON THE BEACH. Then I found Maui Trailblazer. The subtitle is WHERE TO HIKE, SNORKEL, PADDLE, SURF, DRIVE, and even that's an understatement. Before I got two paragraphs into the introduction, I found myself feeling better about Maui and more eager to get out and see it, all of it. The writing is gently conversational and downright seductive. My advice, no matter how you want to see Maui, no matter how well you already know the island, read Maui Trailblazer. It's actually a love story with a fine beginning, plenty of middle and no end in sight.
Midwest Book Review
Collaboratively researched and written by travel experts Jerry and Janine Sprout, Maui TrailblazerWhere To Hike, Snorkel, Paddle, Surf, Drive is a genuinely excellent resource to great hikes, relaxing and adventurous activities, trailheads, nine driving tours available in sunny Maui, a part of Hawaii island group. The "user friendly" text is wonderfully enhanced with more than 200 black-and-white photographs, ten maps, a "Resource Links" section with contact information for accommodations, recreational outfitters, transportation resources, and general visitor information, as well as detailed summaries of the highlights of vacationing. If you are planning to visit Maui, begin your itinerary planning by browsing through Jerry and Janine Sprout's Maui Trailblazer!

    Super Accurate

This is the only guide I've found that captures the spirit and all the action on Maui. I love the hip informal writing style and the direct directions to all the cool outdoor places. Kanaha -- I would never have discovered this beach. Same goes for the red sand beach up in Hana. Good reporting Trailblazers! Priced right, fits perfectly in the daypack.

    Came in handy every day

This guidebook deserves raves. Our vacation was rounded out having all the necessary facts and advice a traveler could ever want, even history. There are directions to all the hikes on Maui, good introductory descriptions of what to expect along the way, then driving directions to find the trailhead. We used it also as a snorkeling guide.

Most books don't include the dangers to be aware of (like currents and rogue waves), this one does along with where to get in, where to swim and see the coral and schools of fish. They even tell you where to rent equipment in their Resource Links section. The feature that we reallly liked was "Best Of", a list of where the authors consider best places to do this or that. Our key to finding the most popular to the most hidden beaches, like Red Sand Beach up in Hana. They round it out with sharp photos and full page driving maps. The way to see Maui.

The independent way to see all of Maui

When it arrived just before we left on our trip we got excited all over again. The book matched exactly what we had anticipated - lots and lots of things to do. It outdoes all the other guides because it concentrates on activities and getting you to them. Having just a plain old map and figuring out where to go would not have provided enough detail. There were numerous little roads to turn off on where you needed the exact mile marker. The guide includes these in the driving paragraph.

This Maui Trailblazer is a complete vacation with its 256 pages and is written by island experts. The locals liked it too.

    I Also Recommend:

    Back to Maui

We've used the whole Trailblazer series. This one we consider the most informative out of all the guides for Maui, primarily because the authors keep updating it. The writing is straighforward and upbeat and there's a little shot of humor here and there where you least expect it. You don't need to hire a private guide or sit on a tour bus when you have this book. We jam it in our carryon for reading on the plane and decide what's going to fill our itinerary. We are always amazed how our days are eaten up by all the adventures they suggest.

Short lists of restaurants and hotels are recommend from budget to expensive and last but not least, a directory of telephone numbers for everything from museums to snorkel mask and flipper rental. They also recommend kayaking companies.

The authors have meticulously researched this magical island. That's why we're going back for more.

    Maui

We flew over to attend our niece's wedding and this guide was in every guest's gift bag. It was the wedding planner's idea and our side of the family had great fun powwowing at breakfast and heading out on excursions. The kids took off for the beaches and adults caravanned to Hana for the day. The Maui Trailblazer was a fantastic tour/idea/educational resource.

First rate tour guide for Maui

The Maui Trailblazer guidebook was our most valuable possession while we were there. Wish we had it the first time we visited. We totally relied on it while driving around and had it out at breakfast time to plan out our itinerary for the day. Their "best of" section scored big. The size was perfect for the outside zipper pocket of my daypack and because it is so well organized we could flip right to the place we wanted to hike and get the lay of the land as well as what to expect on the trail. Beaches - they're all in here and they tell you where the fish congregate and where the entry is best.

Indispensible, a treasure trove of information and photographs. They didn't have to glitz it up with the normal travel goo. Instead the authors give the straight scoop and tell it just like it is. This Trailblazer is well worth your purchase.

    I Also Recommend:

    Hawaii

I like to read guidebooks and have not yet visited Maui but hope to in the future. My next trip over is in April and I'll be trapsing all over Kauai with their Trailblazer for that island. This Maui book is organized the same as the rest in their series and features a new color section. The hikes they have listed look awesome. Orientation maps inside a big plus.

    Packed with activities

Our condo landlords left the Maui Trailblazer for us to use. It was far better than the guide we had along especially when it came to detailed directions. The authors are Hawaii adventure specialists and do all the research themselves. Their interests coincided with ours and we saved loads of money not having to take tours. We crafted our own just by going through the pages and digging out the lesser known trails and beaches. It's amazing how many times we pulled it out of our daypack for guidance. The authors don't ramble on, the writing is fun and concise. Definitely, it was our most valuable "borrowed" possession and now finally we own our own copy. We are going back in October.

    The Right Book To Choose

Finally a new guidebook for Maui that incorporates alot of photos. We let the photos guide us to what we wanted to see and do. Coupled with good maps for every section, circumnavigating the island was easy using their mile marker system. This was our fourth visit and it opened up our eyes to waterfalls and jungley hikes hidden from highway view. Pack it along for a complete and in depth look at paradise.

    Honeymoon adventure

This book came to us as a wedding present. It turned out to be the most valuable thing we brought along. We would have never thought of going to Molokai or Lanai for the day. We explored both and really enjoyed the long romantic ferry rides. Their good directions, abundant photos and maps steered us to snorkeling areas on Maui we would have definitely driven right by. For instance, swimming with the turtles at Changs Point was the highlight of our trip. We feel we made the most of our precious time there and can hardly wait to go back.

    Vacation Excursion Bibles

Our family of four + au pair just returned from our vacation on Maui and Kauai, invigorating to say the least. Since we go to spend time in a tropical climate these guides were big hits and the sources for inspiring us to try out the challenging trails most tourists never experience. Little walks just off the Hana highway we also squeezed in using their Best Of Section recommendations, a real nice feature. These guides are standouts if you like your content laid out clean, uncomplicated (they do it geographically as you circle the island) and want perfect spelled out directions. Each activity is previewed with degree of difficulty and time. We got full value during one week on each island.

Indispensable guidebook on our trip to Maui

All the road rules, all the best places to see are inside this travel handbook. We never would have found our way without their directions. Our first visit to a tropical destination and we needed all the advice we could get. The three of us prepared ourselves by reading all about it weeks before leaving and had the time of our lives. There are unbelievable trails into dense green bamboo forests and hidden waterfalls all over the place. If you're looking for an adventure in paradise, buy this book and prepare to get wet. We let the photos guide us along the Hana Highway and especially liked Twin Falls and the Pools of Oheo. Lots of freebie tips. BIg thumbs up for this one.

    Following the sun

We had a hard time finding this in bookstores and happy to find it here on Barnes & Noble. It arrived right on time along with our Big Island Trailblazer. Both books made our vacation more fun since we like to hike and swim. The special kid's section was super helpful. This is the only guidebook that is laid out logically and easy to follow. Photos galore, good maps, ez navigation.

    The activities handbook for Maui

Love this Trailblazer book. I like to see and learn before I go on vacation and this is what this guidebook does. I ordered mine here one month before flying over. The publication date is 2010, not 2007. Frank and honest, it cuts to the core of what to do and what to skip. Maui proved to be one of the best places I've ever snorkeled.

Heads Up on this guide for Maui

Another super adventure book in the Trailblazer series. We've explored a few of the other islands already and chose Maui for some beach time and some kiteboarding. Never a dull moment on this vacation, so suprised there were so many good hikes in the most unexpected places. The Sprouts have done all the work and research. A bargain for all the info and savy advice.

If you like off-the-beaten track, you will like what's inside. Camping, restaurants, waterfall hopping, safe beaches for the kids, you name it, they cover it.

Maui Trailblazer was our guide of choice

One week on Maui was not enough but we had never been to Hawaii before and divided our trip into one week on Oahu also. The Trailblazer was our GO TO guide for surfing, hiking, sightseeing, snorkeling, fruitstanding, gawking at the kiteboarders, etc.

This guide excels when it comes to directions which ends up a fuel (expensive) saver too. Knowing all the ins and outs of driving to Hana really paid off. Our great Hawaiian escape guided by our trusty Trailblazers turned into a winning combo. We are anxious to return asap. There's more to see that we didn't check off.

    our trip to Maui

This guide was recommended by my son's teacher who initially lent us her copy. After a thorough study we were convinced that we had to own our own. The thing about Maui Trailblazer that makes it different is its variety. When we tired of snorkeling, we went hiking, when we used up our leg muscles, there was kayaking out in Poipu and on a lazy afternoon we drove out to Hana. The Twin Falls area where there were little pools and waterfalls strung along the path was unbelievable. The Pools of Oheo near the end of the highway are worth seeing and we wouldn't have known about this park without the book.

The choices they describe are varied and for different levels and each activity includes distance. We took the early ferry to Lanai for the day. The cheap fare for the ride over and back was a boat tour in itself. They cover things to do on that island too. Next time we will stay overnight at one of the resorts.

    All the Maui action inside

We've been avid fans of this series for over five years. The reason: you get more than one activity in these guides. We go to Maui for the beach time but like to spend our vacation hiking too. These guides don't sensationalize the spot they take you to. They DO excel when it comes to detailed directions and telling it like it is and that's important to us.

We always find something new even though we've been there over a dozen times. This time it was a side entry trail to Haleakala Crater that was the easy way down and the lesser known beach off of Baldwin.

Our Thanksgiving holiday on Maui was totally fabulous again.

    Best guide for us

Maui was fabulous. With this guide we were free to choose all the trails and beaches so easily. There was big surf when we visited and all the choice viewing areas and trails to them are inside this guide.

Our family spent most of our vacation playing in the water and took dozens of long beach walks. We visited Baldwin Beach Park more than three times. The idea here is that you need directions and this is the guide that had the most accurate written descriptions. We liked their positive upbeat spin and practical clean layout.

Has more content than the others

When I compared all the Maui books at the bookstore, this one stood out as the best for amount of information and clear directions. After using it on my vacation I was still happy with my selection. It doesn't blow Maui out of proportion and tells it like it is.

The pages are heavily illustrated with photos of the sites they describe and maps show you exactly where the trailheads and beaches are. No sweat finding all the waterfalls along the Hana Road and the swinging bridges (very cool).

Knowing in advance how long the hikes are sure helped me plan my daily outings. Paia was my favorite town. I also liked the straighforward layout of the book. Even the writing is top notch. The famous wave Jaws is on the cover and this is one of the only books that his directions to the site.

I also visited Hawaii island for one week, used their Trailblazer guide and also award it five gigantic stars.
