About the Author

Maurice Bishop (1944–1983) was the central leader of the New Jewel Movement of Grenada, which overthrew US-backed dictatorship of Eric Gairy in March 1979. From 1979 to 1983, Bishop was prime minister of the People’s Revolutionary Government of Grenada, a workers and farmers government. He was murdered in October 1983 in a counterrevolutionary coup by Stalinist forces loyal to Deputy Prime Minister Bernard Coard. His speeches and interviews are published in the collection Maurice Bishop Speaks (1983).
